They're dumped back on the street a couple blocks from home. Tattoo's head is throbbing and his whole torso hurts. He'd heard Aran weeping quietly in the van, but by the time they get out he's dry-eyed. Tattoo glances away from him quickly. It's uncomfortable to look at him. Tattoo feels almost embarrassed, like he walked in on him taking a shit or something. The way Aran reacted, he knows this wasn't the first time, and he doesn't want to know that, and he's pretty sure Aran didn't want him to either.
He grits his teeth and starts walking toward home.
"Where are you going?" calls Aran after him. "You should go to a doctor."
"I'll be fine," says Tattoo, not looking back. "I just want to go to bed."
Aran doesn't follow him. That's fine. It's not like he can do anything for Tattoo anyway. Aran isn't usually the type to want to be alone, but if anything would do it, the last hour probably would.

Title is from Lake Song by The Decemberists. That, and in a way this whole series, is ultimately mongrelmind's fault.
