Summary
Having only one child, it was natural that Thranduil would think of his son as his little boy, his elfling, his darling child. But Legolas is very much not a little boy anymore, and Thranduil isn’t prepared for Legolas’s teenagehood and everything that comes with it. Mood swings, the sudden interests in girls, and worst of all, Legolas is withdrawing from his father.

turns out legolas has 3 older siblings. three siblings who don't know they had another brother. they left over 3,000 years before legolas was born. they returned cause they finally learned that their mother has been dead. they expect to find their father dead but that is not what they find. when they get to mirkwood they find it sick and a nightmare. spiders attack and they are saved by a random elf (I think you know who it is)

“No, I did not. If Legolas is to be cleansed of the corruption, he needs to be in pure air, in a pure land. He likes to travel, and he is skilled in combat. He could be an asset to your cause while also slowly cleansing the corruption.” The King looked to Gandalf, who deliberated for a moment before nodding.
OR
Legolas is slowly becoming corrupted by the sickness of the Mirkwood forest. Thranduil offers him to Gandalf as a member of the Fellowship to get him away from the forest and cleanse the corruption.
