Summary
Childe’s heart drops to his stomach.
Leaning against the doorway is Zhongli, one unimpressed eyebrow raised as he gazes upon Childe on the bed, completely unfazed.
“Oh, is something the matter?” Zhongli asks in a nonchalant voice, not perturbed in the slightest. He crosses his arms when the answer he receives is shocked silence, his impassive expression betraying nothing of his true emotions. “No need to stop because of me.”
Oh no.
A stretch of silence passes, the two staring at each other in a standstill. The humiliation flowing through Childe peaks, and in his panic, it prompts him to open his mouth to at least try mitigate the damage.
“How… how long have you been here for?” Childe asks hoarsely as he tries to angle his bare front away from Zhongli’s piercing eyes, foolishly hoping that the consultant hadn’t seen the worst of it.
Zhongli hums contemplatively. “Some time,” he eventually says, but the growing tinge of pink on his cheeks tells Childe the truth.
Well, fuck.

Not the blackened stains of shades temporarily banished, but the dark-red and glistening of mortal blood, spattered in desperate arcs across the grass, staining the water where the River Lethe pools. Across the chamber, it shifts to a trail of blood, the imprint of bare footprints burned into the darkening liquid.
There. There, slumped with his back against a green-glowing infernal trove, an ethereal sword buried in his chest, a pool of blood slowly spreading beneath him—Zagreus, Prince of the Underworld, his warmth and light so faded that Thanatos didn't even realize he was still in the chamber.

Prompto laughs in disbelief. “I can’t believe this is happening.”
“It’s happening only if you want it to be.”
“I can’t believe this — you didn’t even take me to a first date, and yet you’re proposing? Gods, Noct, talk about moving too fast!”
Noctis laughs too. How did they end like this?
A story about realizing not everything has to be on your shoulders, building a kingdom back together, and realizing that sometimes love is all you need to keep moving forward.

“You slept through a car crash,” Prompto whispers accusingly, because he’s used to losing sleep to Gladio’s thunder-snores at this point, but Noctis is usually unbothered by them. Noctis, in retaliation, kicks softly at the ankle tucked between his own, ducking down to bury his face in Prompto’s hair as he does so.
“I was already asleep for the crash,” Noctis argues, his tone edging dangerously toward the end of incredulous where it might be heard over Gladio. “I can’t- I can’t fall asleep when he’s already this fucking loud.”
Ignis is going to wake up for sure if Noctis keeps making Prompto laugh like this.
