Summary
Manual reproduction used to be the primary way of troll breeding. Though over the years, more and more wrigglers were born with dysfunctional genetic chambers. Chambers that were only able to retain the slurry for a moderate amount of time before seeing it's uselessness and ejecting it from the body. The empress and her advisors saw this as a very big impending threat, and soon developed the pail and mothergrub system. They were determined to keep their species alive and plentiful. Soon enough the sightings of a natural breeder were beyond rare, and those left were seen as treasures, beautiful and nearly god-like. They were only seen with jadebloods, cared for and protected by them. And when the last few had died out, the tales of natural breeders were only heard of in the history books of jade-blooded school feedings.

Karkat had been captured. Barely a sweep after his generation had been conscripted by the Alternian Navy, after he'd escaped and hidden away on a backwater planet with other deserters and undesirables, they’d all been sold out to the Empire. He'd been taken prisoner by subjugglators in the attack, given as tribute to the Grand Highblood, and then gifted to his descendent. A clown with heavy eyes and a painted-on smile, who–-instead of killing him for the sin of his mutant biology–-decides to keep him as a pet.

You haven’t left your bed for shit except for class and basic necessities in nine fucking months. Dave dumped you two hundred seventy one days ago.
Not that you’ve been keeping count. That would be cliche and completely ridiculous of you. You aren’t some girl in some romcom, despite the fact that you just got dumped by the love of your life-your fiance-your now ex-boyfriend of five wonderful fucking years. No, you’re just some stupid university student suffering through the existential dread of knowing nobody will ever love you like he did because you’re a shithead who doesn’t know how to not ruin things.
You feel thirteen again, all self loathing and a depressive episode that has become more of a too long series than just an episode. It hurts. It hurts and you miss him.

A Motherfucker should never have threatened the only troll that kept the rainbow intact. A motherfucker would have been thought to know better than to attack the glue that keeps half the Clade from rampaging over half the planet's surface and the other half from gleefully facilitating their FLARPing partner's survival(or demise, depending).
A Motherfucker did not know better, but from the mistake of a stranger who doesn't deserve to be remembered, something painfully beautiful and soft and paler than starshine grows between a troll of the Messiahs and one grey-texted troll who cares too much.
Or: Gamzee and Karkat fall stupid in pale after someone is dumb enough to threaten Karkat's family.
