Summary
Manifests were… shapes that one’s soul took. Everyone had one, but only those who were taught could see and interact with them. They could be any shape - animals, plants, even inanimate objects and mythical creatures - and any size - though they rarely went much bigger than their human counterpart.
They were separate from the human form, yet not, at the same time. They had some autonomy, but rarely acted except to keep pace with their human, and never did anything the human half did not… allow, for lack of a better word. The soul and mind were one and the same, after all.
Manifests could interact with the physical world, to a degree. It was something that could be turned off and on; they frequently passed through walls and through closed doors, and ignored the laws of physics. But they could also carry light objects, or disturb dust patterns. And, if that was not enough, the human could, when unconscious or meditating, take control of the Manifest; even give it physical form, for a short period of time.
Still, it rarely had any effect on John’s day-to-day life, even if his own Manifest had an unhealthy obsession with Sherlock’s.
John did not let himself dwell on what that meant for him.
