“Would you shut the fuck up, Harry?” The words are out of Nick’s mouth before he can stop them. It had been a month since Charlie Spring ‘came out’. Came out also known as someone overheard that he was gay and spread it like wildfire. The bullying started almost immediately and hasn’t stopped since. Nick hasn’t said anything… either way. He knows Harry is doing the worst of it but every time Nick goes to tell him to shut up, Nick chokes.
Nick doesn’t know Charlie that well, in fact he barely knew who he was before all this. He still feels awful about it.

His name is Sam, he says, after Grizz has washed and wrapped his shattered fingers with blue tape, after Grizz has taken a washcloth to the dirt of his cheeks, the sweat of his brow and neck and collarbone. Sam is cold to the touch, and Grizz settles him on the couch with a blanket around his shoulders and holds up a hand to tell him to stay there for a moment while he goes back outside to the woodpile, and Sam looks up at him with these bright, stunning blue eyes and Grizz bites his lip and thinks maybe this is exactly what he wasn’t signing up for when he decided to become a hermit.

Nobody ever challenges Campbell, because they know it most certainly will not end well. However, Grizz can’t bare to hear him spout gay slurs towards his brother, who wouldn’t even bother to fight back. So, what else is there to do than pick a fight with Campbell Eliot and make damn sure that he couldn’t bully anybody else, even if it meant placing himself in Campbell’s line of sight?

Finding out that the guy you’re falling hard for is the father of his best friend’s baby is a harsh kick to the gut that can lead to unchecked emotions and words you wished could be unsaid. But, all that there is to do in these kinds of situations is be understanding, and hope that you can explain before they run away to be alone with their thoughts.
