Summary
The kid with blood pouring down his shins is not so far from the dog lonely enough that he thinks breaking his housetraining is worth it for the ten minutes of berating that come with it, the ten minutes of undivided, if reluctant, attention.
Buck thinks, sometimes, that at least he wasn’t the kind of puppy that gets put in a sack and drowned at birth. He wasn’t always unwanted. And he isn’t anymore.
or, evan “i love you like a dog” buckley has only ever known how to love like, well, a dog, but maybe eddie diaz is the kinda guy to give a flea-bitten mongrel a forever home

Summary
Buck knows it’s not sustainable by the fourth night, when he wakes up sweating and unable to breathe, one hand clutching his ribs where she’d stuck him the first time with the cattle prod and the other reaching to turn on the lamp at his bedside.
It’s been one week since he got back, so four sleepless nights puts him firmly in the "more bad than good" territory. What the hell is he supposed to do about all this shit? He alluded to therapy when he talked with Eddie at work the other day, but he’s not going to do that. Therapy is totally hit or miss for him. He’s been to two therapists, one was a miss, one a hit, which means he’s due for another miss.
He’s sure as hell not going to talk to Maddie about it, because that’d be, like, super triggering or something. She just got over her own kidnapping a few years ago. And who else, Eddie? Eddie had a traumatic experience in New Mexico as well; he doesn’t need to be responsible for Buck’s too.
But the fact of the matter is, something’s got to change. So, Buck decides to start self-medicating.

Summary
“How did you get home from the hospital?”
“Took an uber.”
“Does Maddie know?” Silence. “Does anyone?” More silence. More of Buck refusing to meet his gaze, staring at the door like he thought he could entice Eddie to leave by the power of suggestion. Well, good fucking luck, Eddie thought. Wild horses, and all that. “Why didn’t you call anyone?” he demanded. “Why didn’t you call me?”
“I did!” Buck snarled. The momentum of his indignation carried him into a sitting position, and Eddie could see him flinch with the pain of it. His unnaturally stoic front was gone, and something raw and wrenching took its place; it occurred to Eddie that he’d never heard Buck raise his voice before. “I did call you, Eddie! As I was bleeding out on my kitchen floor. You. Didn’t. Answer.”

The squatter in Buck's attic has a knife. Buck has a bit of a breakdown. Eddie has a plan to make everything right.

Summary
“I’ve been patient, man, but—“
“Man?” Buck frowns, making an affronted sound at the back of his throat. “Did you just call me man in bed? You’re kidding me right now.”
“What would you rather I say, Buck?” Eddie quizzes, shoving at Buck’s arm to dislodge him. He hooks an ankle around Buck’s calf and all of a sudden he’s on top.
Settling onto Buck’s thighs for a moment, he leans forward to drag Buck into a kiss, licking messily into his mouth. When Eddie pulls away, he continues. “Schnookems?” He bites at the juncture of Buck’s neck and shoulder, kissing the sting away. “Honey bear?” He mouths up Buck’s neck, pinching a nipple. Buck tries to thrust up against Eddie but has nowhere to go with Eddie’s bulk pressing him down. “Sugar plum?” He glides his hands up, sliding both into Buck’s hair, leaning in for another wet kiss.
“Baby?” he says, sitting up and scooting forward to situate himself over Buck’s dick. Buck whimpers.

Summary
The player reaches Bobby and ducks his head to tug off his helmet. He flexes his fingers as he comes to a stop, and Buck freezes.
Even before Bobby says it, he knows who it is. He’d know that hand movement anywhere.
“Eddie Diaz, it’s good to see you again.”
“You too, Coach. Glad to have you join us.”
Bobby looks around at the other UT Austin players gathered before them. "Before I get to know you guys, I wanted to introduce you to a new member of the team - Buck, come up here.”
Eddie’s eyes follow Bobby’s gaze across the players, a jovial smile on his face, but when his eyes drift to Buck they widen back with lightning speed and his smile disappears. “Evan?”
Shit.
Or: Buck and Eddie met as teens one summer at 118 Football Training Camp - but they haven't spoken since. Several years later, in their final year of college, Eddie meets UT Austin's newest recruit: Evan Buckley.

Summary
First it’s someone who isn’t you. Maybe someone who isn’t even close to you. Then comes the irritation, the secrets, the yelling. The throwing, the screaming, the blaming. The punching of the wall where your face had been just a second ago.
It always started somewhere. One time was a coincident. Maybe paranoia, maybe he was just trying to find mistakes in what made him feel happy because part of him still doubted he deserved happiness, right?
But Buck had ignored his fair share of “One times” in the past few months. So what, Eddie yelled now. He freaked out now. He had secrets now. It was just that one thing.

Summary
“God, I’m so sorry, Buck.” Eddie sounded as if he were crying, “I- I don’t know why I- God. I’m so sorry.”
Buck wanted to tell him that it was okay, that he didn’t have anything to apologize for, but he knew Eddie and he knew he wouldn’t believe him. He didn’t often have trouble finding words to say to the other man but they hadn’t spoken much as of late, first because the lawsuit prevented him from reaching out, and then, when Buck was finally back at the station, Eddie hadn’t wanted anything to do with him. For fucks sake, this was the first time Eddie had reached out to Buck since before the lawsuit. Buck took a steadying breath and pressed the ice pack harder against his cheek, letting the pain the pressure brought ground him.
“I know, Eddie.” He managed to say, “You were just angry and drunk and if you were more clear-headed this wouldn’t have happened. I-” Buck almost started to explain how really, this was Buck’s fault, but he didn’t think that would help Eddie much. So he snapped his mouth shut and tried to gather his muddy thoughts.

Summary
He should be scared.
The thought passes through Buck’s mind and it’s true but he doesn’t feel a thing. There is a gun pressed against his head and Bobby looks terrified even if he’s hiding it well. Hen and Chimney look scared as well, looking up at him, frozen, from where they’re kneeled beside the kid. And Eddie, well, he doesn’t look scared exactly, but he looks angry and at least that is a feeling. It’s more than the numbness that is wrapping itself around every inch of Buck.

Summary
Buck and Tommy haven’t even been together for two months when Buck starts thinking about ending things. He hates himself for it, a little. He can’t put his finger on why the thought crosses his mind as he lays with his head on Tommy’s lap while they watch a documentary about a Napali mountaineer’s quest to summit the 14 peaks. It might have something to do with the put upon sigh Tommy had let out before agreeing to watch it with him. Or perhaps it was the fact that his fingers didn’t end up carding through Buck’s hair until he asked him to do it.
Buck knows that he could talk to someone about it. He has plenty of people who would be willing to listen but each time he goes to say something he remembers how proud they were of him when they found out about Tommy. They’re happy for him and already have so many other things to be upset about. He’s made them worry about him too many times already; it’s better if they think he’s finally okay.

Summary
It’s such a small thing, and yet Buck feels almost like he’s intruding by catching the moment, seeing it in its quiet intimacy.
He glances away, down at his own hands, and thinks rather wistfully, heart clenching something fierce in his chest: I’m never going to get that.
And it’s not the first time Buck’s had that thought; probably not even the tenth, or the hundredth. His brain tends to work a mile a minute, which means he’s used to things flitting through, sometimes with impact, sometimes without.
Now, though, it catches.
Sticks sharp and tacky in his mind.
I’m never going to get that, I’m never going to get that, I’m never going to get that.
Or: Buck thinks he’s unlovable. (Or or: Buck goes through it.)
