“You just can’t stay away from me, can you, June?”
You turn around at the sound of your callsign. Jake “Hangman” Seresin stands behind you, his signature charming grin in place and his biceps flexing as he rests his arms against the end of his pool cue. He’s a walking cologne commercial – tanned and toned and all-too aware of both of those facts – always has been, always will be.
“Somebody has to make sure you don’t fly into a mountain because you’re too distracted by your own reflection in the windshield.”
“Always nice to know you care, sweetheart,” he says, his dimples appearing.
You shake your head, “Shut up, Seresin.”
His eyes track from yours down to your feet, taking their time on the low neckline of your dress and the curve of your waist before returning to your face, his eyebrows lifted in challenge.
“Make me.”

You and Hangman have always had a special spark. At first it was hatred, and then it was mutual respect, and then it was friendship, and now...well, you’re not so sure anymore. Your head shot up a little too quickly at the unexpected company, and the world began to spin all over again. With a groan, you laid your head back on the bartop, hoping the flat wood would help the world right itself faster.
You’d been lying there with your forehead pressed on the cool wood of the bar, sitting directly under an air vent, for the better part of thirty minutes. The Hard Deck’s AC was working overtime to keep the heat outside, and the rush of cold air blowing down the back of your shirt was doing wonders for your sore arms and back.
