A lovely device for looking at the way Sherlock's and John's relationship developed over the years. Equal parts sweet and bittersweet.

Would John and Mary really be able to move forward with their marriage, as they try to in HLV? This is a very nice look at the dynamic between them and offers a compelling altrnative to (that particular) happily-ever-after.

A delightfully spot-on characterization of Mycroft and John, putting both of them out of their comfort zone. For all this warns of angst, by post-Reichenbach standards it's positively fluffy but not in a way that leaves you with the fandom equivalent of a toothache. Original framing device, great humor throughout, and just some very nice slices of life for this unusual characterization.

Summary
“Brother-mine… don’t appal me when I’m high.”
Sherlock twisted his arm painfully behind his back and slammed him against the wall.
Mycroft blinked, open-mouthed and gasping, partially from the pain but mostly from surprise. He’d forgotten how strong Sherlock was when he was like this; how violent. He should have been terrified. His expression almost certainly read that way to John—a small blessing, really. The rush of adrenaline hit his bloodstream in the same way he imagined the cocaine hit Sherlock’s.

I don't always enjoy incest, particularly sexually explicit incest, both because it's so often done badly and because I find the morals of it... troubling. Power dynamics in families can be so tricky, it would take a lot to convince me such a relationship was truly consensual.
Whatever it says about me as a person, that usual moral problem turns into a real strength in this fic. At some level, this relationship is nonconsensual - but from both sides, simultaneously. Mycroft is clearly in control of both his own actions and Sherlock's (the "Good boy" with its BDSM undertones was a wonderful touch), but I also kept hearing John's words in the canon: "He could snap you in two, and right now I am slightly worried that he might." As much as Mycroft seems to want this encounter, I'm not entirely sure he could safely refuse if he were inclined to. My inner academic (former philosophy grad student here) wants to work out the counterfactuals in this whole set-up, but really, the moment is just too fun for too much thought here.
This is sexually explicit but not overdone and not in a bad way. In terms of plot it's almost a PWP, which isn't a bad thing but once you move past the plot to what's going on behind those actions it becomes something else entirely. I also couldn't quite forget the showdown with Magnussen that's coming - like most fans, I have my theories about just why Mycroft brought that laptop to a family Christmas dinner, how complicit was he in Sherlock's plan, etc. And now I'm wondering how much Mycroft was manipulating him, putting his brother in harm's way (because let's face it, if he enjoys a high Sherlock so much that has to face how carefully he pushes his brother toward sobriety), how much of this sexual dynamic carries over.
All that in under 2k words. That's got to be some kind of record. Really, this fic is like those decadent deserts Mycroft never allows himself where you simply have to savor every bite and then spend the afternoon reliving the balance of nutmeg against cinnamon. If the genre at all appeals to you, I can't recommend it enough.

What would have happened at the pool if Irene hadn't called? Also, if Sherlock and John were stuck in a kind of time-loop? Just how many times is Sherlock supposed to watch his best friend die?
Put like that, this fic sounds a little weird and quite a bit sad. It's neither, at the end of the day. Wonderfully written, wonderfully conceived, wonderfully executed with charming characteristics throughout. And at the risk of giving just a little away, Sherlock's moment of joy at the end was charmingly out of character for the way he's presented in series one and in this fic, but with just a hint of the man we see him becoming throughout series three. Amazing, as a certain army-doctor would have put it.

It's hard to know just where to begin with a piece as wonderfully, beautifully dark as this piece. It is the chiaroscuro that gives definition to the lighter moments in the canon. The mutual brokenness of these two main characters is entirely too believable given what I've read of ACD and seen of the movies (only "Game of Shadows," to my shame), but it also makes a good deal of sense given what I know of human psychology. In any event it's a well-drawn tell of need, in every sense of that word.
Needless to say, the sex (what there is of it - it's very brief and certainly not the focus) is intensely erotic. But by mentioning that I don't mean to give it more weight than it's really due. What makes the sex so hot is that it is itself a product of the darkness. For so long this fic walks the thin line between friendship, very close friendship, and a romance that fails utterly to be romantic. And because of this, it really appeals to my own thoughts of Johnlock (though I'm mostly thinking about it in the context of BBC: the way that their relationship is so close in both these movies and that TV series that even when I don't think of it as romantic, it's a relationship that I can see mirrored quite easily in those stories, to the point it makes me wonder just how thin is the line between romance and non-romantic friendship?
But what truly made this story work for me, and I say this as a longtime writer in the Tolkien fandom, is the way it plays with textuality. On the one hand we have John Watson, respectable doctor and veteran, who only drinks and gambles in respectable clubs. The way he has a reality but is not truly real, the way there is a man behind the myth (and with Holmes as well, I think)... it works so well for these men, gives them a depth without violating what ACD was trying to do with his truly Victorian characters and breaths new life into them.
I could go on, but I think I may just want to reread it. Really well done on so many levels.

Would I sound too much like a younger Jawn if I simply say this was amazing? From the aches of old age and being frustrated that Watson's so easily pushed aside, to the growing realization that the man who steadied Watson was really Sherlock's nephew (in retrospect that question of "Do I?" belong with these men is... perfect!), to the balance between catching up and not needing to catch up, to the no-holds-barred, common-sense of wisdom, both on his relationship to Mycroft and his wisdom on the nature of friendship. And the bit about Sherlock not being able to hold his violin any more quite literally brought tears to my eyes.
Just... amazing. Fantastic. And not a hint of "piss off" in my reaction at all. Highly recommended.

Bookmarker's Notes
I was a little cautious of reading this story because Sherlock/Lestrade is not a pairing I find immediately plausible. Combine that with the fact it's written in an established universe and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to buy the emotional dynamic involved. However, I've always been a sucker for domestic!Sherlock, and I also believe - wholeheartedly - that fanfic is about entering into the author's imaginings, not having them satisfy my own. So I decided to give it a try, and I'm really very glad I did.
Sherlock as the brilliant consulting detective a bit worn down by a young child's "logic" (which is really very reasonable in its own way) is, to use John's turn of phrase, amazing. LeStrade's growing realization that perhaps his promise will come back to bite him is amazing. Sherlock's indignation at the incident with the marzipan squirrel is so utterly, wonderfully in-character for the BBC Sherlock that "amazing" no longer does it justice. And then the main event - to say more would be spoiling - and particularly Lestrade's reaction to Miranda's offhand comment, quite literally made me tear up. There's just so much to love in this short piece. Do yourself a favor and hop to; this story shouldn't be missed.
(This is a review of "Who Framed Roger Ribbet?"; I haven't yet read the other stories.)

Reading this, I found I could only mimic Martin Freeman's Watson: It's brilliant. Utterly, wonderfully well done.
