“We should just… go. Run away.”
Luca blinks tears out of his eyes, fat and pearlescent on his cheeks under the moonlight. Alberto has his arm around him, hugging him to his side to try and offer comfort but Luca is too tightly wound for it to make any difference. This is the first friend he’s made. The first person to see him, to pull him out of his quiet and lonely life, and now Luca’s being taken away.
Alberto knocks his head against Luca’s as he sniffles, clumsily wiping at his eyes but missing big patches of green on his cheeks. Luca looks up at him with red-rimmed eyes, confused. “What...what are you saying?”
“I’m saying we should go. Like we planned, right? We’ll go to the town, get a vespa and just… just go.”
It's not a bad idea.
(A 'what if' fic, in which Alberto and Luca really do run away and find out the hard way that life can be ugly.)

The city was big, the buildings were tall, but it wasn’t just the size that made it gigantic. It was the colors, the countless alleys and the even more countless humans, all different and loud.
It was so alive, and Alberto loved it.His father, however, did not seem impressed.

It’s been five years since Alberto watched Luca leave through the train station tunnel to go to school in Genova. And while things have mostly stayed the same with the Underdogs, the town of Portorosso has experienced rapid changes.
With new sea folk moving to the surface, new romances blossoming everywhere, and his nonstop intrusive thoughts about his best friend, Alberto is having a hard time keeping up this summer. Especially, when said best friend is entering into one of those blossoming romances without him.

In the race of romance, Luca’s always coming in last. Giulia’s in a steady relationship with her girlfriend and Alberto’s been in more relationships than Luca can count. Luca’s never been with anyone and he’s a year into college now. When Alberto shares that he simply has the knack for romance, Luca asks him for romance lessons. Luca hopes it won’t take a lot of practice because there’s only one boy Luca wants to love like that.
AU where the events of the movie happened ~2010s, so at the end of the events of the movie all three went to school together, inspired by the song “The Knack” by Mother Mother.

“Giulia. Coffee?” Luca asks from his seat at the kitchen table, in what he hopes is a pathetic enough tone that she’ll make it for him. Giulia gives him a sympathetic look over her shoulder, her hair already tied up in a messy bun. A curl bounces at her temple as she shakes her head.
“Sorry, Luca. All out.”
“Giulia…”
“It's fine, I have a better idea. You know where the science building is?” Luca nods as Giulia is already scribbling the directions on an old pizzeria-flyer, “There’s a little campus cafe just on the far side of the grass, you know where people sometimes study? My brother works there, just tell him I sent you and he’ll sort you out with something. You'll be caffeinated in no time.”
(Luca needs coffee and Alberto has coffee. Seems like a simple enough equation for something that ends up being anything but.)

Luca Paguro had had anxiety his entire life. He always felt like one wrong move would completely ruin him, so he learned to stay out of the sun. Even though he wanted nothing more than to make a friend, or finally gain the courage to talk to Giulia Marcovaldo, he knew it would all be for nothing. The moment he spoke, they would know he was weird and different. Even he knew he was weird and different. He just didn't know how different he was. At least, not until a boy with eyes the color of sea glass came into his life.
Alberto Scorfano always knew he was useless. He knew he was the person who ruined everything, the person everyone grew tired of. So he found it pointless to make friends when they would eventually leave him... Just like his dad had. It's not like he did it on purpose. He probably just wasn't as interesting as he thought he was. And the only interesting thing about him, he had to keep a secret. There was no way anyone here would accept someone like him. Though those thoughts always swam around in his head, it was growing incredibly hard to ignore the doe-eyed boy that always had his head in the stars.Bookmarked by Maskwasii
