Castiel died, and Dean stopped living.
Dean swears to the empty that he will be quiet as long as he can be with Cas. The Empty, enjoying how much pain Dean is in, deny's his request and uses his grief to taunt him. Desperate and delusional, Dean swears to keep his promise. Even after he is thrown back in time by Jack for everyone's safety. Even after there are mysterious portals being torn open throughout the world because of his heartache.
Dean won't give up. Not for anything. He will do anything to be together with Cas. Even if that means ripping out his own vocal chords to do it.

Summary
Lucifer has "greatest" trick, and then his his favorite one. As in "Takes the form of someone the person loves most so he can get them to say 'yes'".
Since Sam is a no go (and Lucifer's bored of him anyway), Dean is his best option, being a vessel for an archangel and all. And why not? Lucifer loves the idea of taking his big brothers things.
He also likes the look on Cas' face when he realizes how much of an idiot he's been.
Poor Cas. He could have had Dean all along. Now Lucifer gets to mock him for it while wearing Dean's face.

The man stops his approach. “Or you’ll… throw a book at me?”
The stranger’s eyes follow the chain from Dean’s ankle to the wall and then centers back to him and the book. He can practically hear the guy thinking something like, ‘what good is a book gonna do you when you’re chained up like an animal?’
“Are you gonna kill me?” Dean hesitantly looks up. It’s a little disorienting to be met with the biggest kicked-puppy-eyes he’s ever seen before. He didn’t expect that sort of expression on the face of someone who was choking a guy to death a few minutes ago.

After getting kicked out from home, Dean lives on the streets selling himself to survive, only to get kidnapped and imprisoned. His savior comes in the form of a man murdering his kidnapper. Not wanting to go back to his lonely, homeless life, he seeks out this mysterious stranger to try and find somewhere he can belong.
Or: Dean is saved by Cas. Cas doesn't want anyone to find out he's a serial killer, so he tries his best to stay hidden. Dean follows him anyway.
