Summary
Once hues of purple and navy started to bleed into the sky, Ghost stood up and brushed the dust off the back of his pants. “I’ll leave you to it then. Be prepared for tomorrow, business as usual, yeah?”
Roach looked up at the other, the last of the setting sun rays melding along his form and reflecting off those sunglasses.
“Yeah, ‘course.” Roach offered another smile.

Summary
Simon 'Ghost' Riley has been working on his own for the last two years. He works best this way. No one to get in his way, no one to worry about but himself, no one around to remind him that his humanity is slipping. But when Captain MacTavish - a man that Lieutenant Riley would call a brother - asks for a favor, Ghost answers the call. It was only supposed to be for one mission, but Ghost finds himself inexplicably drawn to the task force MacTavish had, at one point, wanted Ghost to build with him, and to the blond sergeant that MacTavish has chosen to mentor.
Gary 'Roach' Sanderson is everything Ghost would tell a soldier not to be. He worries about others more than he does himself. He makes himself vulnerable. Too empathetic. He's inexperienced. Unspoiled by the torments of war. Ghost thinks these traits make for a terrible soldier. Sanderson will either break or die.
Ghost doesn't need to stick around to watch that happen. And yet... he accepts the leadership position MacTavish offers him. He is now Lieutenant Simon Riley of Task Force 141. He works alongside his best friend and that pesky sergeant that Ghost can't stop thinking about.

Summary
The last thing Roach remembered was the searing heat. His lungs burned fiercely as he gasped in desperate, ragged breaths. Voices crackled through his comlink, urgent and frantic, but they were drowned out by the roaring thunder of blood pounding in his ears. The fire that consumed him felt strangely soothing: like sinking into a bath of warm water. He welcomed it, embraced it. The thick, black smoke wrapped around him like a heavy, comforting shroud.
Then, suddenly, the pain vanished.
Roach found himself floating in a dark, formless void. There was nothing; no pain, no fear, no sound. Just weightless emptiness.
And then a voice broke through the silence. Calm, gentle, hypnotic. It wasn’t frightening—in fact, it held a strange pull, compelling him to listen. Roach couldn’t tell where it came from, or whether it belonged to a man or a woman, human or something else entirely. But the voice was clear and crisp, echoing softly through the endless darkness.
