Summary
For the past four, almost five years, Aether has been a private investigator, being hired by one police department after another, somehow always ending up on the trail of the most notorious mafia in Tevyat, the Fatui. Quickly after joining an investigation in his latest case, the famous investigator stopped Sumeru City's corrupt government officials and the Fatui with the help of Sumeru's broken police department, a handful of concerned citizens, and a few officials who were none too pleased to be working with the mafia. He managed to arrest one of the Fatui's Harbingers—the top executives in the mafia—in the process.
Now Aether has to protect Scaramouche to obtain the little bit of information the Balladeer might have about his sister's whereabouts.

It makes the ball joints in his ankles, already visible through skin torn and pared down to the metaphorical bone, all the more prominent.
He doesn’t need to eat; Nahida brings him food anyway. He doesn’t move as she draws near, though she’s certain he hears her. In the dimness of the cell, the violet streaks in his hair seem almost to glow. Below them, the mitsudomoe symbol stamped into the back of his neck stands stark against his flesh—an indelible reminder of his artificiality.

The Rito didn’t even deign to give the unconscious swordsman a glance.
“Hero or not, we’re not letting him off the hook just like that,” Revali’s voice climbed an octave. “He’s too dangerous— we saw what he’s capable of. We have to kill him while he’s still weakened!”
“We aren’t killing him,” Zelda asserted again. This time, she lifted her eyes. Her voice held a note of cautiousness, but it was still unshakeable.
“If we’re to even hope to defeat the Demon King, we need the hero on our side. We have to take him with us.”
