Summary
Hanahaki is common with grief. Love with no place to go. Sounds poetic. Sounds pretty. It also looks pretty, the flowers are usually fresh and smell beautiful.
It doesn't feel pretty or beautiful. The thorns are scratching at her throat. She can feel them in her lungs as they're digging their way out. Meryl wants to stick her finger in her throat, grab and pull them, but when she tries she only finds the gag reflex.
For a while, it must be grief. Wolfwood said so. It's just Roberto, it's just July, it's something that's dead and can't affect her anymore. She needs to cry it out and feel better. She tells herself she work on herself and survive it - does she really even want to?
But there comes that first flower, that first gods damned flower and she knows.
Vash calls them geraniums -

That’s when he noticed her nails. Raw and bitten, fingers tense and off around the fork. There were small spasms going through them, and Wolfwood plucked the fork from her fingers and brought her knuckles to his lips. Her pads were calloused, and she didn’t shoot enough to warrant it. It must be the driving.

“We can keep it as sex.” if it’s purely physical, she didn’t have to think, to ponder, to get hurt. She could handle just sex. They probably both can, especially when they’re just using each other to fill the JuLai sized void left inside. She could do just sex, she could do something hot and emotionless and bury the rest inside the same casket she’d buried Vash, Roberto and all the feelings that feel too big to handle with no one to prod from the passenger seat. “We can keep this simple and not care. We can just use each other.” She’s giving him all the outs he could possibly want, he just needed to take it. He just needed to kiss her and not speak, he just needed to be gone in the morning so he didn’t see her regret it.Or: neither wolfwood nor Meryl deal extremely well with surviving Julai. But they did, and they have to live with it. And each other
