*‘’YOU CAN’T JUST TAKE HER LIKE THAT!’’*
A voice echoed through the cold hallways of the ARK. Gerald Robotnik, greatest scientific mind, frowned at the visible anger pouring out of his son’s voice, his grip on his table as the screen from the transmission buzzed. He could count with one hand the amount of times that he had seen or heard one of his boys truly infuriated. It really hurt to know that his own father was the cause of his distress. But he had to understand, for the sake of his daughter’s future. She is unable to just stay on earth with a sickness that would slowly consume her until she tragically succumbed to it. He couldn’t allow it, he would *not* allow it. Maria was a strong and brilliant girl, his most valuable treasure in life, nearly everything the oldest robotnik had ever done so far had been for her, to grant her the opportunity to live in a peaceful world that she could thrive in, a world where she could inhabit and find happiness within. Fate was cruel, and it simply broke his heart to see someone so wonderful as his granddaughter pay the price for it

A figure slowly arising from the depths with a confident smile, crossing their arms and opening their mouth to speak. Their voice was slightly rough, almost as if they hadn’t used it in years. ‘’I’m the world’s ultimate lifeform, since you were so kind to release me, my master…’’ They began, making Sonic’s head snap right towards them. ‘’I will grant you-’’ Suddenly, the figure seemed to falter. And Sonic finally got a good look at them. Their fur was pitch black, quills slightly raised in a shape that resembled that of a star with red highlights adorning the edges. Rings clutching tightly onto their wrist. Sonic remained silent, hesitating for a few seconds before a nervous smile made its way into his face. ‘’Uh…’’ The figure cut him off. ‘’Why do you look like me?!’'

Due to wonders of fate, Sonic is the one that frees shadow instead of eggman in the beginning of sa2. Shenanigans ensue.

He didn’t know what his true purpose was, but he knew that as long as he was aboard the ark, as long as he *lived*, he would take care of her if she needed him to. ‘’Shadow?’’ her soft voice broke through his thoughts, making him tilt his head at her in a way that made her giggle. His brows furrowed in confusion. ‘’Sorry! You look so cute when you do that.’’

‘’What happened? I’ve never seen you like that.’’ Sonic hummed in response. ‘’Don’t worry too much about it, it happens sometimes.’’ Shadow tilted his head to the side slightly in visible confusion. Making Sonic look away in an attempt to stifle a laugh, before speaking again.

“How? From the way he talks, I’m quite certain that he does not even exist in our current time.”
Or, Sonic remembers pieces of a timeline that never seems to have happened. It spooked Shadow, it spooks him, so they’re heading back to Soleanna, to the heart of it all.
