*‘’YOU CAN’T JUST TAKE HER LIKE THAT!’’*
A voice echoed through the cold hallways of the ARK. Gerald Robotnik, greatest scientific mind, frowned at the visible anger pouring out of his son’s voice, his grip on his table as the screen from the transmission buzzed. He could count with one hand the amount of times that he had seen or heard one of his boys truly infuriated. It really hurt to know that his own father was the cause of his distress. But he had to understand, for the sake of his daughter’s future. She is unable to just stay on earth with a sickness that would slowly consume her until she tragically succumbed to it. He couldn’t allow it, he would *not* allow it. Maria was a strong and brilliant girl, his most valuable treasure in life, nearly everything the oldest robotnik had ever done so far had been for her, to grant her the opportunity to live in a peaceful world that she could thrive in, a world where she could inhabit and find happiness within. Fate was cruel, and it simply broke his heart to see someone so wonderful as his granddaughter pay the price for it

Shadow was shaking just as much as she was now, his throat closing up with fear. “But- but without them…” He couldn’t bear to finish the thought. “Maria, please, this is preventable. You’ll be okay if you just let me get the doctors.” He was begging at this point.
Maria wouldn’t let go. As awful as it was, she knew Shadow would not get the doctors if she didn’t want him to, no matter how foolish the decision was.
“But I won’t be okay.” It finally slipped. “Shadow, I’m not okay.”

Summary
Maria has come to a realization: she's going to die. Naturally, she takes this about as well as one could expect; after all, even she has her limits. Upon realizing that she's the sacrificial lamb that pushes Shadow towards his future, she can't help but be upset that she's the price of the world's survival.
When she meets a new face in Amy Rose, the latter gets to see how the lamb feels about being led to the slaughter, and how much it hurts to be a supporting character in someone else's life. Amy isn't content to let Maria face this news alone; she'll do whatever it takes to help her through this time.

Summary
Maria doesn’t mind Shadow being quiet.
When people talk, he looks up: at faces, at indicators of a command, a direction, guidance. He waits to be told what to do. Run on the treadmill; give a blood sample, squeeze the dynamometer; do a spinal tap. He’s got a voice, a memory lauded with languages, all the means and reasons to ask the what and the why.
They drain him, the researchers; yet, he doesn’t ask what for. Maybe somebody’s already told him. Or he overheard his purpose. He’s alive so she can stop dying too early, and that’s enough for a purpose for him, so he does as he’s told.
She tries to give him opportunities to just be her little brother, just do fun things with her, things that don’t hurt him. He’s always clueless what to do then. Mobian hedgehogs are a social species, much in the same way humans are. Shadow’s not very social.
She knows there’s a lot in his head that he won’t or can't say. It’s just how he is. She’s fine with that.

Shadow the Hedgehog sacrificed his life in exchange for Maria's by giving her his organs and blood. She caused Maria to develop his doom powers, and their manifestation caused the ARK scientists to seal Maria away. Fifty years later, Sage awakens Maria in the hopes of receiving her help. Maria says she'll give it, but the doom powers have corrupted her to the point that Maria wants to destroy the world that took Shadow and Gerald from her.
Elsewhere, Tails is a genius who personally tests out his inventions by going on adventures. He gets caught up in the whole affair with Sage and Maria because he wants to protect the world.

He leaned against her, knuckles burning and face hot with tears and the slap. “I’m sorry,” he repeated, unable to say anything else. “I’m sorry I’m so worthless.” She released him and at first, he thought she was just as angry with him, but instead, she cupped his cheek in her palm and moved his head to face her,
“You’re not worthless,” she asserted, meeting his crimson gaze. “You are magnificent, Shadow. And don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise.”

“You said.. The stars are prettier from Earth,” His eyes darted back to her, and she blinked, his ears airplanning, “Wouldn’t we view them from Earth together?”
Oh, aahh, the promise. Maria hummed, fingers lacing with Shadow’s, “Of course, Shadow. The stars are beautiful anywhere, and we definitely will be seeing them on Earth, that’s a Maria guarantee! I just… don't want it to be my job, that I work until I grow old, yknow?”

Sure she had to take care of her cousin and little sister every day. But she was used to it. She would just get through high school, then go to college when everyone is out of high school. She'd take care of her family, go to school, improve her musical skills, and everything would be great.
