You two must follow me,” he starts to briskly walk out of the testing wing, looking back with urgency after a few steps, “Quickly!” At that, Shadow takes Maria's hand, following the professor’s pace. Once they leave the safety of the testing wing, Shadow’s ear twitches, picking up a faint sound. A repetitive banging, much deeper into the arc. It only takes a moment to identify.
Gunshots.
In an alternate timeline where Gerald is alerted of upcoming GUN raid months in advance. Long enough to make a contingency plan. Now G.U.N. isn't going to get their hands on either of his wards, they won't get their weapon, or lay a hand on dear Maria. He just hopes they forgive him one day, even if he doesn't live to see it.

A breakthrough with his hypnotherapist sends Shadow the Hedgehog back to the Space Colony ARK for the first time since the Black Arms incident, hoping to uncover secrets that Professor Robotnik left behind that may fill in some of the blanks about the events leading up to that fateful raid. With the help of Rouge, Sonic and Tails (Omega would have pitched in but he doesn't fit in the sshuttle) he brings the ARK's systems fully online for the first time in over fifty years, and promptly gets a hell of a lot more than he bargained for when the servers are done booting up.
You see, if the alien warlord who calls himself "Black Doom" turned out to be lying about those DNA samples having immense potential medical benefits then Gerald Robotnik had another, even more desperate and risky plan to save his beloved granddaughter. And that information would have saved Shadow a lot of wholly unnecessary angst if he'd known about it before they had to find out whether or not it was going to work the hard way.
Knowing Maria's a furry might've been handy back then as well.

The folks living there are quite friendly too, and before long the two siblings find themselves pulled headfirst into the caring, colorful little community that calls the Island home. But there's more to Piñata Island than meets the eye. When they're not chopping down blackberry brambles and chasing away thieving piñatas, they're uncovering hidden doors and family secrets. The Robotnik legacy is tightly interwoven with the Island's way of life, and the more they discover, the harder it is to imagine living anywhere else.
