Summary
“Inej,” the therapist said gently. “Would you like to introduce yourself?”
Inej inhaled slowly before she spoke, as if measuring the cost of each word.
“I’m here for aggravated assault and evasion,” she said. Her voice was soft, but it carried. She shifted in her seat, hesitating. "And...two counts of third degree murder but—I don’t believe that defines me.”
A few people shifted. Someone scoffed quietly. Kaz watched the room instead of her, cataloguing reactions like inventory.
“And you?” the therapist said, turning to him. “Kaz.”
He leaned back in his chair, cane hooked loosely under one arm.
“Kaz Brekker,” he said. “Fraud. Racketeering. Conspiracy. Eight counts of first degree of murder.” —That they knew of.
He paused, then added, “And I object to the premise of this exercise.”

Kaz meets Inej for the first time in mandatory group therapy as part of the rehabilitation program at the Blacktide Correctional Facility.

Summary
The brush of the warm leather of his gloves against her skin made Inej shiver. She wondered how many times Kaz would end up patching her up in one bathroom or another; wondered if the tension radiating between them would always be that achingly sweet. Even if this bathroom was not as gilded as the Geldrenner’s, she couldn’t help the sense of déjà vu. There was the same longing, a tenderness in his featherlight touch her body could not help but respond to.

Summary
Kaz had to admit the traffickers were surprisingly clever – for thick-skulled pirates, at least. He had not expected to be ambushed on the site of his future textile manufacture out of town. Or, well, what was supposed to be the site of his new project. Seeing as he’d been set up, it seemed he would need to find a new abandoned warehouse to repurpose. It was an annoying detail that would have to wait, however, since he was presently tied up to a chair.
Inej's enemies capture Kaz to lure her in a trap. It doesn't end well for them.
