“Inej,” the therapist said gently. “Would you like to introduce yourself?”
Inej inhaled slowly before she spoke, as if measuring the cost of each word.
“I’m here for aggravated assault and evasion,” she said. Her voice was soft, but it carried. She shifted in her seat, hesitating. "And...two counts of third degree murder but—I don’t believe that defines me.”
A few people shifted. Someone scoffed quietly. Kaz watched the room instead of her, cataloguing reactions like inventory.
“And you?” the therapist said, turning to him. “Kaz.”
He leaned back in his chair, cane hooked loosely under one arm.
“Kaz Brekker,” he said. “Fraud. Racketeering. Conspiracy. Eight counts of first degree of murder.” —That they knew of.
He paused, then added, “And I object to the premise of this exercise.”

Summary
The brush of the warm leather of his gloves against her skin made Inej shiver. She wondered how many times Kaz would end up patching her up in one bathroom or another; wondered if the tension radiating between them would always be that achingly sweet. Even if this bathroom was not as gilded as the Geldrenner’s, she couldn’t help the sense of déjà vu. There was the same longing, a tenderness in his featherlight touch her body could not help but respond to.

Summary
Kaz had to admit the traffickers were surprisingly clever – for thick-skulled pirates, at least. He had not expected to be ambushed on the site of his future textile manufacture out of town. Or, well, what was supposed to be the site of his new project. Seeing as he’d been set up, it seemed he would need to find a new abandoned warehouse to repurpose. It was an annoying detail that would have to wait, however, since he was presently tied up to a chair.
Inej's enemies capture Kaz to lure her in a trap. It doesn't end well for them.

Summary
Five years after reuniting with her parents, Inej invites Kaz along to the fall festivities that bring together several Suli caravans in a forest area near the Ravkan capital. This being his second visit, he feels more than secure about his status as Inej's partner.
The local community has other ideas, which forces both Kaz and Inej to reassess how they feel about something they haven't allowed themselves to even consider until now.

Inej snorted. “The terrible? Saints, is that what they call me?”
“Some of them, I’m sure,” Kaz said with a serious tone, though the corners of his mouth were pulling up in a smile. He shrugged out of his jacket and hung it beside Inej’s hat, tucking his gloves in the pockets and setting his cane against the door.
She had rounded the corner of her desk and snaked her arms around him when he turned to face her. Her hand traced up his chest and rested on his jaw. “And what do you call me?”
Kaz hummed in thought. His hands roamed her sides precariously, holding her tight to him. “Beautiful. Dangerous,” he swallowed hard before dipping his head down. He nudged her temple with his nose and pressed against her hair, drunk on her scent. “Mine,” he rasped.

Kaz cut him off with a sharp rap of his cane against the floor. “Freedom has a cost.”
Voskel nodded quickly, bowing his head. “Yes. But the cost of inaction will be higher. The empire will sweep through your kingdom in a fortnight. You have maybe two hundred fighting men at most. You cannot hold them back like this.”
The scholar’s words slid into his mind like knives. He hated that they were true.
Finally, Kaz straightened and turned toward the door. “Find me someone who can guide me there. Not a mercenary who drinks away his courage, not a scout who runs when the shadows start whispering. Someone who doesn’t scare easy.”
Voskel blinked, then nodded, relief plain on his face. “There’s a woman. A blade-dancer. They say she can walk on air, move without sound, disappear in a crowd. If anyone can get you to the temple alive—”
Kaz’s mouth curved into something sharp, something dangerous. “Then she’s exactly who I need.”

Except Inej is not so sure. She remembers him, remembers his cunning. And thinks perhaps there is more to the story than what he has spun.

Inej returns to Ketterdam to winter there and she and Kaz attend a charity event organized by the very rich Jellen Radmakker, to obtain information on certain dynamics within the Merchant Council. However, during this little spying job, Inej glimpses someone from her past, which leads the young couple to discuss what it means to be there for each other in a relationship and how they will move forward from here on.

"[...] I missed the Wraith’s excellent sense of hearing during these months," he said, his rasp a bit lower, a bit less secure.
Inej smiled. She was no longer a Dreg, but captain of her namesake ship and she loved it. Part of her, however, would always remain a Crow and she liked to help Kaz with some little jobs here and there when she returned to Ketterdam.
“I missed you too,” she said, extending her hand: an invitation.
Kaz took it in his almost without hesitation and Inej couldn’t help but feel a hint of pride. He intertwined their fingers, letting his thumb caress her sea-wind molden skin.Series
