    An AU fic where Winged Ryland Grace finds a Siren/fish Simon. Might rewrite later.
    He'd thought he was hallucinating at first, or even that the eel was back to playing trick on him, when he first saw light through the blood. But, as it got brighter, closer he was forced to realize, it was real. Something was coming closer, he propped himself up on his one remaining arm, he would not go down without a fight. Unfortunately for Simon he was exhausted and his body trembled even holding himself up now, it didn't help that by trying to pull himself up his tail had moved again grating against the debris painfully. He would live, he would. He'd fought so hard, he wouldn't die in this damnable ocean, but thoughts alone weren't enough as he collapsed again making a small cloud of silt as he fell back to the sea floor. He was tired, and as the light sharpened and clarified as it approached he saw a figure clad in diving gear and with- were those wings? Maybe he really had died, but why would angel come for him?

    Somehow, in some twisted, unbelievable turn of events, the fate of the entire planet, billions upon billions of people, had fallen on Ryland Grace's shoulders. It was a burden he wasn't fit to carry. A burden that he could feel in all its massiveness weighing down on his chest, squeezing his lungs until all he could eke out of them where wheezing, barely-there breaths.

    He pressed his forehead harder against his knees and curled his fingers tight around some of the fabric of his pants, his knuckles turning white. He couldn't—this wasn't how it was supposed to—

    Or Ryland Grace is a middle school teacher turned lead astrophage scientist. Simon Fischer is a convict turned engineering specialist. Surely absolutely nothing could go wrong on a cosmic scale because neither of them are astronauts.
