When Crowley first finds out that Aziraphale has been back from Heaven for over a month, he’s angry. White hot rage kind of anger. The kind that burns hot and bright and quick. Then he’s just confused. Why not reach out? Why not call? A lousy letter would have sufficed.
The angel doesn’t reach out and Crowley only learns about his return by accident, by driving past the bookshop and seeing that tuff of white hair through the window.
Thus starts his weekly drive-byes, his need for answers and cowardice of confrontation warring with each other.
Or
Aziraphale returns from Heaven three years after he left with the Metatron and it seems Crowley is the last to know. When confronting Aziraphale at the bookshop, they both get more than they bargained for.
