That summer had started with a feeling of unimaginable possibility. We’d seen enough shows on TV to know what happened in the summer before senior year, especially when you were a pretty girl. And we all knew she was a pretty girl. What we didn’t know was that those shows we watched, the ones about high school parties, growing up, and finding true love, neglected to mention one simple fact:
