    Sam and Steve have tracked the Winter Soldier back to New York, but they have to put their search on hold when a wizard starts robbing banks on Broadway. During the fight, Steve gets hit with a spell that separates him from the rest of the Avengers, leaves him 10 inches shorter, 145 pounds lighter, and convinced the year's still 1943.

    And of course once Steve's forgotten about him, he runs into the Winter Soldier.

    Steve wishes Bucky wouldn’t look at him the way he does – a deliberate gaze, subtly digging his top teeth into that pouty bottom lip; following his every move like a lion watches a gazelle. It’s been going on for months, perhaps longer... Steve talks, and Bucky listens. Well, that’s the point – Bucky’s supposed to be listening. Steve’s just doing his job, after all… No harm in that.

    The problem is that it’s no innocent gesture, the way Bucky will have the top of his pen tracing the outline of his mouth... It’s also not innocent at all when Steve turns to look out at the sea of heads while he’s speaking and catches the quickest glimpse of the brunet sneaking a peek at his ass. And Bucky doesn’t even pretend to be bashful about it. He just meets Steve’s eyes and smirks – just the tiniest hint of a thing.

    Even bigger a problem than all that is how absolutely wrong it is. There are a million and one reasons why Bucky’s behavior is inappropriate, and why the way it makes Steve feel is even more inappropriate.

    For starters, Steve is Bucky’s teacher.

    Secondly, he’s only seventeen.

    So there they were on the Lemurian Star, doing what was supposed to be a routine hostage rescue, but as aforementioned, good plans go to shit.

    Shit being the legacy he gave everything to being rotten from the core out; shit being this brave, new world losing it’s shiny veneer to expose the same human faults that plagued his time; shit being brothers thought lost to mountainous ravines really being tortured into brainless nightmares.

    Steve’s focus was Bucky. It had to be Bucky. He was Steve’s best friend in the whole world, had been his only family for so much longer than he wanted to think about, and there was no way in hell anything was stopping Steve from getting him back.

    Of course, that’s when Steve finds his soulmate.

    “Bucky!” Darcy curses, fumbling to cover herself, even though the damage is done. Course, she manages to knock the dish towel on the counter down to the floor because she’s flustered and Darcy’s already a complete klutz even when she isn’t flustered. She’s left ducking down, mostly naked, behind the island counter, peering over the top.

    Darcy flushes, heat beating fire engine red in her face. At least they're in a blackout, so the only light filtering in is from the glow of the street lamps and the passing traffic. If there’s any justice, the light from outside won’t extend enough for Bucky to be able to see it. Darcy’s karma, though, clearly, is shit tonight so the bastard can probably see it all. Which, reminds her, oh, yeah, naked and cowering behind a kitchen cabinet, like a totally legitimate adult.

    Fucking karma.

    That roommate AU I have no intention of writing, but somehow manage to keep writing little stories in the pretend verse I have set up.
