Summary
Teru didn’t close his eyes, that he was sure. Still, he couldn’t recall his trip to the hospital, or the first aid that the paramedics and then nurses offered him, or the horrified faces of the patients cluttering the neighboring rooms. All these details were told to him in patches by other people; the hospital employees. He supposedly went through emergency surgery less than an hour after he arrived, and the anesthetist called it a miracle that he had no sequelae. None of that he would have known.
Nothing, nothing but his and Kageyama’s fight.
Those memories didn’t arrive in flashes. They were burned into his brain.

Summary
Oscar studies him clearly from mussed hair to scuffed boot, focusing in on the strange half-second in which he felt his way along the pew in order to move closer. Time had not been kind to either of them, leaving its obvious marks in various places. Instead of pointing out new scars, the wrinkled state of his jacket, how the knot of his tie was not quite tight enough, he simply drinks him all in to the best of his impartial ability. It is not easy.
“You’re still thin,” he admonishes kindly. “That always worried me, you know?”
Carefully he lifts his remaining hand to Arthur’s face, palm cupping one side of his jawline as if feeling along the bone there. Automatically Arthur closes his eyes, sinking into the touch. Just as soon as he leans against the fleeting shiver of heat, it’s gone.
Arthur and John return to what they left behind, hoping for a fresh start.

Suddenly, everything slotted into place, as did the meaning in that now-so-distant promise. It hadn’t just been about returning to Arkham, but when they were no longer running for their lives. When they were no longer threatened by insane, all-powerful gods from other planes of reality. When they weren’t bleeding, and broken, and feeling more and more inhuman as the days went on.
When they had finally scrounged up a scrap of peace.
And they had. Somehow, miraculously, they had that, now. Peace. Calm. A life of their own—lives of their own—separated and comfortable and, dare he even think it, stable. By comparison, of course.
How had he allowed that promise to slip by the wayside?
