Summary
Following the Battle of Five Armies, Bilbo could not stay in Erebor. It was too dark, too quiet, to somber.
Especially without the presence of one particular Dwarf.
So Bilbo goes back home to the Shire, to his fire and his armchair and his books, and ignores the ravens that perch on his fence and the sideways looks his neighbors give him.

Bilbo knew as soon as he and Thorin woke up in the morning, grumbling (one of them far more than the other), unwilling to give up the last vestiges of warmth. He saw it in the way Thorin’s eyes tracked him as he got ready, following even more closely than usual. Then they lingered outside their chambers for far too long saying goodbye.
And so, Bilbo prepared their chambers, had dinner set up, and dressed himself from head to toe in precious metals and gems.or
Thorin's goldsickness returns every few months, but after a while, his possessiveness of gold morphs into Just Wanting to Love Bilbo.

Thorin himself was prone to long periods of silence, especially during the evenings after busy days, when it would be up to Bilbo to coax him into conversation. He and Thorin were not ones who clanged and clanked about through life, but over the past three weeks, Bilbo had discovered just how quiet life really was when they were separated."
