Summary
Roman is thirteen. It’s late at night. He’s on the floor of one of the house’s butler kitchens. He’s crying, and he can’t remember why. Something aches in him, and he can’t tell if it’s physical or psychosomatic, or both. There’s a heavy-bottomed glass in his hand, and it’s filled with the last dregs of a bottle of wine he’d stolen from the cellar.
And at one point, his father is in the kitchen with him. He knows before he opens his eyes, and when he does look, there he is. Straight-backed, staring back at Roman, at the wine still not sunken into the bottom of his glass. He looks at Roman as if Roman is meant to say something.
It’s a fair expectation. Roman always says something.
But at that particular moment, there’s nothing. Roman looks back at him, and in his memory, he can feel the burn of something, some evil, dark thing that wells up in him, and he knows that his father clocks it, because he turns around. He turns around, and he leaves Roman alone.
This is the part that Roman doesn’t understand.
(Or: the one where Roman has a lot to reckon with.)

Just because he looked at Roman’s body didn’t mean he saw anything about it. Just because his eyes went somewhere didn’t mean he even looked. To God everybody human was an ant, and nobody noticed if an ant was any smaller than another ant. Only the ants.

Summary
“Come on, you three,” says Connor’s voice, scratchy over the phone. “This Sally-Anne person’s not the end of the world. Maybe you’ll end up liking her!”
“If I hear that harp one more time, I’m killing myself,” says Roman.
A silence: it goes on so long Shiv thinks the phone’s disconnected. “Romey. Roman, you wouldn’t actually kill yourself, would—“
“Don’t be stupid, Connor, he—uh, he says that every fuckin’ day. ‘I’m killing myself’ is how Roman says hello,” deadpans Kendall. Roman and Shiv snicker; Connor took him seriously? Pathetic. This is why Dad thinks Connor’s weak.
“…Oh,” says Connor. “Okay.” Silence again. “Well…well, guys, speaking as someone who went through this when Dad met your mom, my advice is to just make the best of it.”
The Roy siblings during the summer of Sally-Anne.
