Summary
“I gave Lara a drink and a shell,” Mari quipped back, moving the empty cake boxes towards the trash. There were still so many boxes to eat, especially before the expiration date, but it made Lara happy.
“Not just any shell,” Gon drawled, stretching her fins. “A chambered nautilus shell. Mari blinked at her before continuing to move the remaining boxes and crumbs away from the beds. “I swear- it’s the most important courting gift you could ever give another mermaid.”
Or, Mari accidentally gives Lara a courting gift, and deals with the consequences.

Summary
The stunning clarity of it hits Lara all at once. What Mari had always known, what she had told Lara at fifteen, bright-eyed and already looking ahead: that she was going to keep fighting the next, stronger opponent, and every one after that, until she became the strongest in the world.
Mari was already the best boxer in Shiga. She couldn’t become the world’s greatest if she stayed.
Two years after her departure, Lara returns to Shiga for Mari's high school graduation. A trip to Kyoto helps bridge the distance between them before it changes even more.
Or: On goodbyes, reunions, and a love strong enough to live in the spaces in between.

Summary
the old law only knows one ending, for humans and mermaids are not meant to be. if a mermaid princess does find love in the surface, the story has always known what to do with the wreckage.
no one ever wrote down what happens when it doesn’t end in wreckage at all.
(edit as of september 21st, 2026: the finale gave me mixed feelings, so this fic will continue to update lmao)
