All Joel really wants is to just get laid in peace. He learns very quickly that there is no privacy in a place like Jackson, where his family is determined to try and live in his goddamn pocket. Or 3 occasions that him and Ava get caught in the act:
1. Ellie learns the hard way about the importance of knocking:
“Yeah and you n’ me both know that you never come straight home…” Joel counteracted, remembering he still had a card to play that could potentially somewhat dig himself out of this hole.
“Yeah well the fucking heat was making my arm itch like crazy… All I wanted was a shower but nooo, instead I had to witness you balls deep inside your girlfriend!”
2. The toddler’s fast asleep in the room next door, right? WRONG!
Frustrated with the sheer stupidity of her parents and their perseverance in keeping this new pet hidden from her, Lily folded her arms abruptly across her chest, “But Daddy said!”
The mothers face dropped, “Daddy said what?”
With her little lip wobbling, she wiped the back of her hand across her tearless eyes, “Daddy said last night that-that your pussy cat was soft and perfect and-and I just want to pet the pussy cat…”

It was absurd optimism, a ridiculous fight: don’t fucking die. But it was the biggest Fuck You she could muster against reality. She was not going to give in, no matter how bad it got. She’d seen people take the easy, quiet way out with their pills or bullets. She got it. She even envied them a little. That kind of quick death would never belong to her. She was too full of fight, too angry at the world.
“We’ll go as far as we have to,” Joel murmured.
