“Permission to speak freely,” Amélie requests, observing how he puts his large hands on the backrest of the chair in front of the desk and expertly spins it round on two legs so it’s facing the bed.
There’s a hush of silence that befalls the room as he sits down and hauls a hand through his dark curls. Gabriel tugs on his sweater and pulls it over his head, folds it meticulously on his lap and then gingerly places it on his desk.
Everything about the efficiency of his movements betrays the discipline in his military life.
And his hands of course, Amélie muses quietly as she awaits his response, a pair of soldier’s hands, tough and coarse and not unscathed.
When he’s done with this almost ritualistic display, he gives her a curt nod.
“You’re paying me three fifty just to watch me get off?”
It seems her question came across as too blunt because he narrows his eyes, drops his hands between his knees out of habit and hunches forwards a bit, makes himself smaller while he shouldn’t.
He tilts his head and regards her, unsmiling, answers after a beat, “Yeah.”

“I know this song.” Widowmaker murmurs, shifts in her seat, squeezes the armrest subconsciously and straightens her back. Her mind’s fogged up, as if she can’t decide whether she’s still there in the motion of the dance or sitting here on her way to the UN Headquarters.
Reaper snorts and retorts brusquely, “Everyone does. It’s a classic tune.”
She blinks owlishly, regards her rifle pressed into the space between the driver’s seat and the backseat for a brief moment and tries to shake off this sense of dissonance, of disassociation.
Yet she finds herself voicing the question on the tip of her tongue, “What’s the title?”
There’s a tense silence, tempered with only by the driver shifting gear and taking the exit for the bridge, then the song skips to the next one. Reaper eventually mutters, “Fuck if I know what it’s actually called.” After a curt pause, he continues, “It’s part of Swan Lake. Tchaikovsky.”

He reaches blindly for his shotguns under the bed with one hand, wants to have his fingertips bump against the stock or the barrel of one of them, to be reassured by the knowledge of having them close-by.
There’s a blue mosquito light plugged into the socket near the bathroom and its glow seems to drag on towards his side of the bed, highlights the several blood stains on the floorboards that the cleaning lady couldn’t get out.
His hand and wrist are caught in the light, the pale scar tissue there discolored, blessed silver.
Eventually, he rolls over on his left side and traps some of Widowmaker’s long tresses underneath his elbow. She groans lowly, shifts until her knees are pulled up under her torso and takes part of the sheets along her, exposing his right side.
“Get off.” It’s a whisper, in a hoarse, gravel and wine voice; the soles of her feet flat against his shins, pushing.But he doesn’t budge, only presses the sharp joint of his elbow down onto her hair and makes the mattress dip—until she feels it in the roots of her hair, hisses and turns onto her back, cranes her neck to peer at him with half-hooded angry eyes.
