Evan McCone had been in the Running Man game too long to go out like Daniel Killian wanted him to. He'd learned a long time ago he had to look out for himself alone. And so he calls in a favor from his favorite rival and ends up on a new side of the revolution against the very empire he helped fuel. Two problems: said favorite rival still hates him, coming from the other side, no one's keen on his ideas, and there's only so much his silver tongue and Network-taught marketing schtick can do for him.

Sixteen years ago, Mila Nero lost her first ship in a raid to "Mad Captain Silvo." Her career recovered, but present day finds her jobless and nearly broke. Stuck, she responds to a shady job ad seeking a pilot to help a struggling father. When the ad turns out to be a ruse from four well-meaning kids who don't trust their temporary guardian, a supposed Jedi-Pirate who's trying to take them to a home she's never heard of, she can't just leave them alone with him. Not that she's given a choice, considering the ship blasts off before she's even given the chance to leave. But the longer the trip gets, the more the secrets and mysteries start piling up, and her unknowingly-shared past with the rogue, who just seems happy he's not the only adult on the ship anymore, ends up being the least of their problems.

He has her mother flown into the county, claiming to be the Deputy’s boyfriend who wants to surprise her with a family reunion. The Deputy arrives expecting trouble and plays along to keep her mother safe. But when it turns out that John’s also invited her father along, John realizes he vastly underestimated just how much drama a family other than his can have. He picked one Hell of a family to fake-date into.
