- He watched as Sirius wordlessly passed over a cigarette, which Moony caught between his teeth and accepted the spark light between Sirius's pale fingers. After a few puffs, Sirius plucked the fag from Remus's mouth to smoke some for himself. Seamless. The well-oiled familiarity of friends who'd been smoking together since the day they returned for fourth year.
- "You're getting too good at that, lads," James chided. "Before you know it, it'll be a lifetime habit."
- Sirius laughed. "Well, you know what they say: a fag is for life, not just for Christmas."
- As if to prove James's point, Remus started coughing dramatically.
- "See? State of you, Moony. Not even seventeen yet and your lungs are busted."
- "No use stopping now then," he croaked without missing a beat. He held up the cigarette in mock salute and inhaled petulantly.
aka. it's 1977 and the Marauders are unstoppable - as long as you ignore everything unsaid.

Remus moved his hands over his jacket pocket, frowning when he couldn't feel the familiar shape of the lighter.
“Need a light?” a voice spoke to his left.
Remus turned his attention to a boy leaning against the casino wall. The first thing he noticed about the boy was his raven hair, which lay in a messy shag against his shoulders. The second thing he noticed about the boy was his smirk. It irritated Remus in an incomprehensible way.

Remus Lupin never went to Hogwarts, but was raised in the Muggle world as an orphan. He learned to survive by using his magic to steal from innocent people. But when a certain dark haired boy finds him outside a bar and offers to teach him real magic, Remus is thrown head first into a magical world in the middle of a war.

Summary

Summary
Long haul Remus Lupin story, previously titled Shifting Lines. Book One covers his First Year at Hogwarts and all its ups and downs. Making friends, keeping his secret, and trying to cope with being in the real world for the first time in his life.
If you want to read the later books but not this one then I do have a summary of the story up!
The world of Shifting Lines will eventually include Wolfstar. Mostly canon with a few exceptions.
Please note there really should be a lot more tags but I dont want there to be a wall so I'm trying to keep it short. I took some of the fluffier tags. I mostly kept in the darker ones as warnings but I promise there is more than angst in this.
Also if the stuttering is annoying, I want to say that changes as Remus grows more comfortable with talking to people and by the second book he doesn't stutter a lot.

Non-canon compliment fic based off of atyd, so it contains parallels to MKB89's fic as well as some original characters from that same work. Events from Harry's life still somewhat take place towards the end, but with a few adjustments and some major changes (as in people don't die) AKA THIS IS AN ALL THE YOUNG DUDES FIX IT FIC from october 1981 = everybody lives <3
