Last summer, Kazuya had watched Koshien from the other side of the fence, had to watch someone else call for Eijun pitches, had to watch him be in a battery with someone that wasn’t him, and it had been fine — because at the end of the day, Eijun would have been in his bed, blabbering away about some obscure shojo manga Kazuya had never heard of, all the while showering Kazuya’s neck with dozens of kisses and bites.

“I brought you flowers,” Miyuki says suddenly, steeling himself with a familiar game they play. His back is straighter, but Eijun can still detect his underlying nerves.
Eijun recalls the ones he had seen by the front door and smiles. “What do they mean?” he asks, aware that Miyuki is fishing for an opening to say something.
Miyuki takes a step toward him. “I miss you.”
The Legend of Sawamura Eijun was supposed to be one for the ages but instead of ending with a bang, it ends with a whimper.

“kazuya,” youichi spoke as soon as kazuya answered the call. kazuya’s eyebrows furrowed. youichi’s voice sounded strange.
“hmm? yeah?”
“something’s…happened,” said youichi, rather cryptically.
something akin to panic rose in kazuya’s chest. there were so many things it could be but, chief among them, seidou stood out in kazuya’s mind.
“what?” kazuya said. there was a slight tremor in his fingers. he could feel his heartbeat in his throat. “youichi. what is it?”
youichi let out a shaky, shuddery sigh.
“kazuya, chris-senpai…died last night.”
kazuya has spent a decade and a half running from chris and eijun and their stupidly perfect relationship. then chris dies. kazuya has to stop running.

"Listening to your heartbeat calms me down," he adds, quietly as he looks down to his own hand. Kazuya inhales sharply, feeling the heat of a blush racing along his neckline. Eijun buries his face back into Kazuya’s chest and inhales deeply, a shuddering breath as he snuggles closer.
