Majima took his elbows off the table and slammed it with his palm, making the beer cans and the ashtray jump, laughing maniacally.
“There's no way I'm comin' all the way out to this backwoods town without even tryin' to find my favorite dragon!”
“Speaking of that,” Kiryu said weakly, “How exactly did you find me?”
Majima's grin broadened. “Nah-ah, Kiryu-chan,” he wiggled his finger. “A guy can't go 'round revealin' his sources. Let's just say a little bird told me 'bout an apartment that the Dojima family had in Sapporo. Decided to check it out. Secured a spot in that cafe on the corner and waited for ya to show up. Honin' my detective skills.”
“So when you saw me coming,” Kiryu said slowly, trying to comprehend. “You climbed up on that roof like a cat and jumped me?”
Majima hee-hee-heed in response. “Ya gotta have that element of surprise in your life, Kiryu-chan. Otherwise, it's just plain borin’!”
Kiryu looked at him incredulously. Rumor had it that Majima was batshit crazy. He was starting to believe it.

“Yumi Sawamura,” Seonhee replied matter-of-factly. “Dead for nearly twenty years.”
Silence fell around the table as they all considered this new angle. If they were talking about any other guy Seonhee would have suggested finding him a pretty girl who’d show him a good time. [...] But she knew it just wouldn’t work. It’s not that Kiryu-san didn’t appreciate beautiful women; he just wasn’t a man who’d fall head over heels for one so quickly. It was a quality she admired about him, and which, at the same time, annoyed her to no end. The man was immovable like a mountain.
“There had to be someone else,” Saeko said. “You don’t really believe Kiryu-san didn’t even have a crush on anyone after Yumi died, do you?”

Saejima buries his face into his hands, sinking his fingers into his eye sockets. He wants to scream but nothing comes out. Suddenly there's a hand on his shoulder and he jumps, ready for a fight but the touch is warm, non-violent.
This is not solitary. He is sitting on top of soft sheets and the mattress sinks in under his weight.

It's way past midnight, and all the occupants of the prison cell are asleep. Or are supposed to be, at least, because there's only a few hours until the guards come and wake them all up and force them to begin the next long, monotonous day.
Two of the prisoners are lying on their backs on their perfectly spaced out futons, sleeping soundly. The other two are awake, on futons pushed up next to each other, Saejima's large body slotted up perfectly behind Baba's slimmer, significantly smaller frame.
