Summary
Buck put down his brush and admired his handiwork in the mirror. It wasn’t much, just a rainbow flag on his right cheek and a bi flag on his left, both a little smudged around the edges, but he didn’t really care about that.
Today was his first time at Pride as an out and proud bisexual man. And he was gonna dance, and enjoy himself, and march down the street with his very hot, very gay boyfriend holding his hand. Just thinking about it set a flock of butterflies free in his stomach, a nervous smile sneaking onto his face.
He wanted to belong somewhere. Had always wanted to belong somewhere. And yeah, the 118 was his family, where he did belong, but…
This felt different. He couldn’t put his finger on why, but it did. Like something that had never made sense about his life had suddenly clicked into place.
*
Buck is vibrating in his own skin about attending his first Pride as an out and Proud™ part of the community. He spent hours finding the perfect silly, but accurate shirt, the best face paint, the highest quality bracelets...
Then he sees Tommy's outfit. And almost decides they don't actually need to go.

Summary
“Oh, he wishes!” Tommy scoffed playfully, deciding to ignore the not-at-all-convincing expression, the corners of his mouth ticking upward as he looked down at Little Man, rocking him gently. “He’s actually eternally on my craplist because he peed on me when I changed him and now my shirt smells like piss.” He started tickling Little Man’s belly, drawing out a few small grunts that could almost be mistaken for a laugh if you were feeling generous. “You’re a little pee machine, huh?”
Hen’s expression softened, though there was something in her eyes that Tommy couldn’t quite place. She hesitated for a moment before finally pulling a stethoscope out of her bag. “Alright, baby boy,” she said, reaching for the baby. “Time to see how you really are.”
Almost instinctively, Tommy took a step back, pulling Little Man closer. “Yeah, I don’t think that’s a good idea. Can you do it while I hold him?”

Tommy never wanted to do this. He was perfectly happy to keep this part of himself a secret from Evan, ride out his full moons on his own with whatever flimsy excuse he could come up with. It was only once a month anyway.

Summary
“Tommy. Tommy, wake up!”
Tommy groaned and turned to the other side, away from the voice that tried to rip him from his tenderest of slumbers. Literally nothing had ever sounded less appealing than waking up right now, not even Evan telling him that it was his turn to change the twins’ diapers. Whatever that voice said, he’d just stay here, in his cozy, warm cocoon he’d made himself with his sheets and keep sleeping.
Sleeping…
Slee…ping…
“You’re forcing my hand here, babe.”
Before Tommy’s sleep-addled brain could even begin to try and make sense of the voice, (that grew more and more familiar with every word…) he suddenly felt a forceful push against his back. With a startled yelp, his eyes snapping wide open, he felt himself move over the edge of the mattress and land hard on the ground with a thud.

Summary
“Well, that’s…” Eddie said the moment the team had arrived and climbed out of the engine.
“Unfortunate,” Hen finished, her eyes fixed on the roof of the house they’d just pulled up to. Buck couldn’t exactly blame her. Up there, surrounded by absurd amounts of fake snow (and some of the most garish Christmas decorations Buck had ever seen), was a rather burly man in a Santa costume, his lower half stuck in a chimney, screaming and shouting out curse after curse. (Some seemingly not even in English, Buck noted. They sounded vaguely German to him, and for a moment he wondered if that made him racist.)
“That’s gotta be a new one,” Chim muttered, squinting up at the struggling Santa. “I mean, we’ve seen plenty of Santas in sticky situations, but this? This takes the fruitcake.”

Summary
Tommy startled, his head snapping over to Evan, his eyes wide as dishes. He recovered quickly, though, and shot Evan a sheepish look. “Just thinking about what your parents are gonna have to say about you popping the question.”
[...]
Evan’s gaze held his own for a beat, steady and warm, in spite of the icy wind that Tommy was sure was going to turn his skin blue any moment now. “They’ll be fine,” he said firmly. “They’ve come a long way. We all have. And if they’re not, well...” His face turned harder suddenly, almost determined, even. “It wouldn’t be the first time I picked somebody I love over them.”

Summary
“I just want you to know,” Tommy said, his voice quieter now, “that you’re kind of amazing.”
Evan blinked, caught off guard by Tommy’s sudden show of sincerity. “Me? What about you? You’re the one who agreed to do this with me, antlers and all.”Tommy chuckled. “Yeah, but this is your thing. You’ve got this huge heart, and you’re out here doing something about it. Most people wouldn’t.”
Evan’s cheeks flushed, and he looked down, suddenly shy. “Nah, I’m sure they would,” he mumbled. “I’m not special.”
Tommy smiled, moving his hand off Evan’s knee to grab his hand. “Most people wouldn’t,” he reiterated, giving Evan’s hand a gentle squeeze. Evan looked up at him, his eyes shining like a pair of sapphires. “And even if they did, you’d still be special, Evan. Special to me.”

Summary
“Look, Maddie,” Tommy started, rubbing his hands together as if trying to warm them against the chill in the air. “I didn’t want to hurt him. Ev-Buck… he’s… he’s a good guy. I know he is, but…” He stumbled over his words, trying to sound sure, though the excuses tasted bitter on his tongue.
Maddie studied him, her face softening further, though the intensity in her gaze never left. “You’ve been hurt before. And that scared you so much that you’re now running away without giving this thing with Evan a chance.”

“Excuse me?”
Buck and Tommy, who’d just watched Jee-Yun skip down another driveway to the next stop of her trick-or-treat tour with a bunch of other kids they had just met here on the curb, looked over to where the voice had come from. A young woman, maybe in her late twenties or early thirties, with a face full of green paint and dressed in a black witch costume, had wandered over to them, a kind smile on her lips.
“I’m sorry, I don’t want to disturb family time. I just wanted to tell you that your daughter’s costume looks amazing! Is it homemade?”
Buck’s eyes went wide, his gaze moving from the woman’s face to Jee and back again. His mind briefly flashed back to that one time he and Eddie had taken Chris to see Santa a few years back, and he could almost laugh that something similar had happened again.

Summary
“Not renewing?” [Buck] echoed, a slight smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “And what? Move into the station full time?”
Tommy laughed, shaking his head. “Not quite what I had in mind. I was thinking more… you know, here. At my place.”
[...]
“You… You want me to move in with you?”
Tommy stopped drying for a second, focusing on folding the towel in his hands to avoid meeting Buck’s eyes. “Yeah, I do. I mean, we’re here all the time anyway, right? You’ve got a drawer, you’ve got space in the closet, half your stuff’s already in the bathroom. It just makes sense. Plus…" He finally looked up, his expression softening. “I like having you around, Evan. It feels… good. Natural.”

Summary
“They don’t seem like they bite,” Tommy observed, in that casual, dry tone Buck had grown to appreciate over the past few weeks. In an instant, a part of his anxiety evaporated and bubbled to the surface in a barely held back snort.
“Not literally, no.” Buck ran a hand through his hair with a shake of his head, the slight smile Tommy had brought to his face staying on his face. “It’s just... history, you know? They’re trying, and I get that, I do. But sometimes it’s like...” He trailed off with a shrug, struggling to find the right words. “It’s like I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop.”
[...]
“Well,” Tommy said, squeezing Buck’s hand again, a bit firmer this time, “if things get weird, you’ve got me for backup. Just say the word, and I’ll distract them with my fake mouth static.”

Summary
"Tommy, what happened?" Evan’s voice started to cut through the fog in [Tommy’s] head, slowly clearing it away, bit by bit. "You're scaring me."
Tommy tried to speak, but his mouth felt like it was full of cotton. He swallowed again, forcing himself to breathe slowly, methodically, like he’d learned to do whenever his anxiety threatened to swallow him whole. One breath in. Hold. One breath out. But it wasn’t working this time. The panic clung to him, refusing to let go.
“I… It’s…” he managed to choke out before a strangled sob broke through out of his throat, making his entire body shake. His eyes practically erupted in tears Tommy didn’t understand, but couldn’t hold back either. “My Dad. My Dad died.”

Summary
Evan smiled back, a soft, almost shy smile that made Tommy’s heart stutter, and tentatively reached out to Tommy’s hand, but then quickly pulled back at the slightest brush of their fingers. The contact was brief, but long enough for Tommy to feel a jolt of electricity run through his body. Evan, red-faced, cleared his throat. “I, uh, I’ll hold you to that. But just so you know, I’m picky.”
“Noted,” Tommy said, trying to sound casual, but he couldn’t help the way his voice softened. He hadn’t even thought about it, but now that it had almost happened, he really wanted to hold Evan’s hand. He fought the urge to grab it though. Evan had said he wasn’t sure what he was ready for. Showing PDA with a man might’ve been too much. “We can hold hands. You know, if you want to.”
