Lucien remains silent as his eyes continue to track him. A spark of irritation flares at his stubbornness, but Caleb closes his eyes briefly. If Lucien had potions, he would’ve used them before it got to this point, so they must be back with the others. Their situation has gotten more complicated, and Caleb being an alpha certainly doesn’t ease Lucien’s wariness of him in the slightest.
“We’re…” Caleb clears his throat, trying to find the right words. “You need to bunker down before it gets worse—”
Lucien barks out a laugh. “Save your care for someone else who would appreciate it, wizard, or are you changing your tune because I’m a bitch going into heat?”
“I’m expressing concern as any decent person would,” Caleb retorts firmly.

After… After that, they slip into a deep slumber, thinking their role is finished. Only to wake up to a new master, dancing to the tune of another death. They flit through bodies with a slight falter, for their masters’ legs aren’t caught up to their rhythm. But they make it work with a flick of their wrist, a spell on their—the master’s tongue, for this is what they were made for.
When the act is finished, the curtain closes, and they go back to sleep, until they’re forced to repeat the same play, over and over again.
The battlefield is another stage for murder.

Beep… beep… beep…
The sounds are muffled in Wang Yi’s ears as he stares out the window at the clouds. He hears Xiao Qiang talking to the doctor in the halls, but he can’t hear them clearly enough to make out the words, nor does he want to. As he watches the clouds drift by, he catches sight of a pair of birds flying back to a nest hidden in a small ledge of the building. In it, three chicks stretch their necks out, begging to be fed.
Wang Yi tightens his grip on the hospital sheets, tearing his eyes away from the sight.
