In a world where pro heroes are gods, their chosen humans are revered. Hitoshi has never seen the bright capital with its collection of Lineages. Who cares, anyway? The gods certainly don’t care, not for the humble peasants like Hitoshi. He is going to go somewhere far away from his tiny village and open a cat rescue. Just as soon as he can get away from his parents.
Or, Hitoshi is kicked out, breaks into a shrine, and proceeds to hit the god of the shrine with a stick.

Hitoshi isn’t devout, not like some of the soot-streaked street kids he shares sleeping spots and body heat with. Not like scarred Shouto or flinching Izuku, who both swear by Yagi, God of Perseverance and Patron of Common Heroes. Not like humming Kyouka, who dedicates every song that trips off her tongue to Yamada, God of Music and Patron of Restless Souls, to make even the most desperate of panhandling a prayer. Hitoshi has long-learned that sort of faith is for people with slightly more hope than him.
But this is shelter, and it’s shelter he desperately needs, and Hitoshi is not devout, but Hitoshi is also not stupid.
Hunted, terrified, and with no other options, Hitoshi takes shelter in a shrine. He expects less than nothing. What he receives, instead, is help.

“Hello?” Once again, no words were produced, instead a panicked wail. Frantically scrambling up, Hitoshi immediately realized his predicament as he wobbled on four legs. Four. How could he not recognize his favorite animal?
Holy shit! Holy fucking shit, he was a cat! Catching sight of his actual, real tail, Hitoshi spun rapidly, tripping over his useless legs and finding himself sprawled back on the ground with a pained cry. He was an actual cat.
Hitoshi was a cat.
(Or, Hitoshi gets turned into a cat. He does not have a fun time.)
