In an effort to improve security training for its humans, Murderbot decides that controlled memory wipes are the only way to give the authentic 'chased by a dangerous SecUnit' experience. It really wishes its humans would stop complaining about the idea. It knows what it's doing, alright? This isn't a serial ruled by dramatic irony. Nothing's going to go wrong.

This wasn't how I'd planned things. Somehow, I'd always pictured something more orderly. Something less deadly. Obviously my escape couldn't be bloodless, not if I were to stand any chance of getting away clean, but I had thought that the casualties might stay in the single digits. One or two dead humans to screen me, and then one more when I got what I wanted.
That "when" was starting to look more like an "if."

After the events of All Systems Red, GrayCris is able to leverage their strange synthetics and scrape together a bribe that will pacify the company—the company will not go after them legally, and will turn a blind eye if anything happens to happen to the evidence. People from freehold planets have very little credibility in the Corporation Rim, so if they can pay off the company, all they need to do is get rid of all the hard evidence of their wrongdoing. Including all of Murderbot's memories of the survey project.
And Murderbot, who's been purchased by people it no longer trusts or knows, must decide if it wants to trust or know them again—while also keeping its memory loss secret and trying to protect its new humans from the encroaching threat of GrayCris that they keep running headfirst into.- Language:
