Summary
Three years after the war against the dead, Jon Snow has disappeared beyond the Wall.
He lives alone with Ghost, barely eating, barely speaking, and among the Free Folk he’s become more rumour than man. When Tormund finds him half-dead in a cave and drags him back to camp, Jon discovers that the North never really recovered from the war. The Free Folk are frightened of something they call the Hush; storms that swallow all sound, and blue eyes watching from the dark beyond the firelight. Then a dead woman is found carrying two things that shouldn’t exist, an ancient Valyrian journal and a white dragon egg.
As Jon slowly gets his strength back, he learns how the Free Folk have survived: ringed camps, warding ropes, and standing stones that can only be raised with the blood of kings. South of the Wall, Queen Sansa is struggling to keep a starving North from falling apart. In King’s Landing, Tyrion is fighting riots with ledgers while Bran watches and waits.
To protect the people who once saved him, Jon will have to accept what he is, a Targaryen as much as a Stark, and become more than a man with a sword. As the Hush closes in and old magic stirs, the choice he makes will decide whether the North survives.
