Gerry had grown up in the apartment above Pinhole Books, and spent a large chunk of his childhood working for his mother in the cramped little bookshop in Morden before he finally left both the shop and his mother when he was sixteen. He had stayed with Jon and his grandmother for a little while after that, before managing to find a shitty little apartment with a landlord who didn’t care about his age. As far as Jon knew, he hadn’t been back to Pinhole Books since.
“You could just sell it?” Jon suggested in a moment of what he knew to be unfounded optimism.
“Yeah, could do,” Gerry mused unconvincingly.
“But you won’t, though, will you?”
“Don’t think so, no.”
“Do you have a single good memory of that place?”
“Not yet. Is it weird that I’m calling you about this?”
“What? No, of course not.”
“Will you run it with me?”
“What?”
“The bookshop.”***
Jon gets an unexpected call from his childhood best friend and his life takes a turn.

Summary
All Jon wants is a quiet life, far away from Elias’ clutches - even if it means living in a drafty old cottage isolated from the next village. Jon is a mage, after all, and people are reasonable to fear both him and the patron who grants Jon his powers. But then there’s Tim, who greets Jon with nothing but kindness, and when Tim asks for help Jon finds himself unable to say no.
Together, they embark on a journey to find Tim’s missing brother. A journey that turns out to be more dangerous than they expected, and that leads Jon right back to the horrors he tried so long to escape. Thankfully, having a friend at his side might make all the difference.
