The hospital is quieter at 3:00 A.M. No shuffling of feet or wandering nurses asking her questions. Just the sound of the machines in front of her—humming steady, overlapping rhythms.
Vital signs, cortical mapping, motor responses. They all pulse in mechanical harmony. Every flicker of light corresponds to something that should, realistically, be impossible. Indicating the firing of neurons that were clinically dead forty-seven hours ago.
She’d finally done it.
Rosalie exhales slowly—her wet, gloved hands hovering just above the edge of the patient’s bed. She’s not supposed to be here. Not this late, not in this wing of the hospital—where all of the cadavers awaiting incineration are stored.
Not at all, really.
But it doesn’t matter. She’d accomplished what she’d set out to do. And her position as chief neurologist and orthopedic surgeon of Forks Medical Center was no longer a necessary appearance she has to keep up. It granted her access to the tools she needed. Fresh bodies. Organs. Fresh blood.
But she can’t step away, not yet.
