    Yet, when he receives a letter from his old writing partner after seven years of zero contact, he drops everything to fly to New York and work with him again, this time on the stage.     Viktor lifted his hand to carefully cradle the tendrils. “Utral Mokri, the Tree of Voices,” he said in a hushed and reverent tone, “I’ve wanted to see it my entire life.”

    It’s a beautiful tree, Jayce thought, but it’s nothing compared to you. Ringed by the light of the gently swaying, glowing tendrils, Viktor was a religious painting brought to life. Regal and elegant, he stood there with wonder on his face and delight in his eyes. His pupils reflected the lights, shining like glimmering stars. He seemed larger than life, larger than the planet they had found themselves on – like he could cover the entire sky with one hand.

    Viktor didn’t seem to notice the holy state of himself. “Jayce? Are you okay?” he asked, concern evident in his tone.

    Jayce Talis, accomplished inventor, arrives on Pandora with the urge to flee from everything he has ever known. He finds himself paired with reclusive scientist Viktor Sokolov, who studies tsaheylu, the consciousness-bridging bond made between the creatures of Pandora. In their Avatar forms, they conduct an experiment that changes who they are to themselves, and to each other.

    “I'll come back for you,” Jayce whispers in the darkness, his face pressed close to the soft wet lips of a dying immortal. “As soon as I can get away, I’ll bring you food. I’ll be back… Stay alive. Promise me.”

    Viktor watches him with pale yellow eyes, and says nothing at all.

    He wonders if the Angel will die. What would that make Jayce, in the eyes of God?

    Basilica Larvis, more commonly known as the Basilica of Masks is the church of a dead God. It is inhabited by Angels and monks who still follow the hollow teachings of their belief under the watchful eye of Non Believers.

    But something strange has been happening to the Angels... and monks have started to go missing.

    So there they are, a shopkeep and a curious stranger, losing daylight in silence. The man studies Jayce’s work while Jayce studies him, and isn’t curiosity just one hell of a thing? It can motivate a topside scientist to brave the gray, and it can bully out years of ingrained wariness to make room for itself.

    The man moves again, the necessary three steps left to reach a workbench of works-in-progress. The metalwork of it is rough, all hinges and mechanisms wrought from steel scrap. The beginning of a knee joint, sitting next to the first prototype of Jayce’s own leg brace.

    The man’s gaze lingers there, intent and molten in the dimming afternoon light. Then he’s reaching out, reaching forward, his careful fingers tracing along welding seams and scratches in the metal, and Jayce’s curiosity flash-boils.

     

    “Can I help you?”
