Instantly the monster was before him, blood vessels pulsing angrily as it dug a clawed hand into his face with a death grip. Blood poured down his cheeks. Tanjiro’s expression remained unchanged. That seemed to do the trick.
Those glowing red eyes bored into his soul.
“You said there’s nothing left for you to fear losing. You’re wrong. I can take your prized humanity too.”
Tanjiro’s eyes widened at that as the wounds on his face began to burn. -

Through the targeting of the Survey Corps, for their whole branch to become wanted criminals, he’d slipped back into his hypervigilant mindset from his days on the streets of the underground. He was expecting a backstab at any moment and was prepared to be the one to strike the first blow. Waiting around and being the innocent party made you the dead party.

He craved his humanity, to be told there’s nothing wrong with him, more so than any food. He wanted to earn his freedom, he wanted his merit to mean something; that he became strong of his own accord, that his dreams and ambitions weren’t stupid.
Originally Levi thought these were the only things chaining the beast, manipulative devices to drive him for their cause. But seeing this shattered teen on the floor, he realised it was the opposite. Eren clung to those chains, tethering himself to these comforting normalities and desperately hoping they were real and true. -
