Awareness does not come to Jayce gently.
In fact, throbbing pain crashes into Jayce's vulnerable mind, so visceral that it sends his body stumbling out of bed in a misguided attempt to escape. The ache sharpens, intensifies, hammering between Jayce's eyes, and Jayce clutches his head, teeth clenched. Flashes of disjointed memories echo in the periphery of his vision.
Flying. Falling. Over and over again, in all timelines— blue, Hextech blue— in all possibilities— his mother, Caitlyn, Mel, Viktor— a butterfly flaps its wings and somewhere in another reality Jayce's skull crumbles under the unceasing march of time— affection, regret, grief. Loss.

When Viktor finally asks why Jayce stayed behind inside the Anomaly with him, Jayce stares at him as though he’s supremely disappointed by the question— as if Viktor has betrayed his own brilliance by asking something so irredeemably stupid. “How could I not? We’re partners.”
Partners, Jayce calls them. Not for the first time, Viktor wonders: Partners in what?
