A ghost of a smile touched her lips. “I’d send you after them.”
He returned the smile, but it was awash with the guilt he’d always helplessly, hopelessly, love more than her. Joel wanted her angry and unforgiving. It sustained him. Tess knew what it was to want to hurt at the hands of the one she loved most. They gave one another everything. Most of the time, it wasn’t pretty. But that was what they were.

'“It’s that bad, huh?” Joel said gruffly, self-consciously running his hand through his hair, his eyes fixed on the curls on Benji’s head. “I…” he cleared his throat and looked at Tommy for help.
“Tess cuts our hair,” Tommy blurted out, pushing a glass of whiskey into Joel’s hand as he came around the couch.
Maria blinked at them for a moment, thinking back to literally three days prior when she’d given Tommy a trim. And the dozen or so times before that.
“Used to,” Tommy clarified, sitting down. “She always cut our hair. It’s… her job.”
Joel took a swig of his drink and sighed, not quite able to look at Maria or Ellie yet.
“I’m so sorry, Joel,” Maria said quietly.'

She's sitting cross-legged and pretty in a plastic chair across from him while crunching on a salad, her lashes fluttering at him with false innocence when she catches his bleary eyes coming into focus. "So…come here often?" Shoveling another bite in, she leans back and waves her spork between him and the baby still sleeping soundly beneath his hand.
Clearly, she knows the answer to that.
He lies anyway.
"Sometimes." He drawls out, eyeing her warily.
She snorts loud and ugly, lettuce bound to be all up in her brains from the action. With an upward flick of her brows, a quick show of disbelief, she digs through her salad and gathers another bite before muttering not under her breath, but low enough to mind the sleeping infants within the vicinity.
"You still lie like shit, Joel."
Yeah, well.
Ain't a skill he necessarily wants to hone.

Shoving herself upright, she splashes beige tinted water onto her face from the trickling tap before forcing herself to meet her own eyes in the mirror, the starkly white wash of her skin making her look ill. The drift of her hand drags her shirt back up and her breathing catches, an undignified whine slipping out of her as she stares unblinkingly at that small protrusion, it's existence undeniable now that she knows.
She's pregnant.
And she can't tell Joel, he can't know.
