Then they look at Fies, who is sitting in the carrier with the expression of someone who has done nothing wrong and would like everyone to know that.
Then they look back at each other.
The vet looks between them and says, carefully: is it possible she's been fed twice?
It is, it turns out, extremely possible.
(Fies has been running a long con. She has been running it for months. She looked Derek in the eyes every morning and acted hungry and he fed her. She looked Avery in the eyes every morning and acted hungry and he fed her. She has been doing this since approximately week three of Derek living in the apartment. Derek decoded an eldritch cipher in seventeen minutes. A four-kilogram cat has been playing him since November. He is going to need a moment.)
