“I’m fine,” she said, way to quickly, wearing a forced smile.
She had to be okay. Everyone needed her to be okay. The others shouldn’t have to worry about her. She needed to be there to cheer them up. She couldn’t let her emotions get in the way of that. It didn’t matter how horrible she felt. She had to hide it. No matter much she wanted to be comforted. She couldn’t have that. Not now. Not ever.
