“Buck?” Eddie asks. Buck doesn’t look up. “Did I say something wrong?”
“No, ’course not,” Buck says, shaking his head and smoothing out the blanket. “You’re right, I-I do follow you everywhere.”
“Okay,” Eddie says carefully. “Is that bad?”
Buck huffs a laugh. “No, no, it’s not. Just—revealing, I guess.”
Eddie’s silent for long enough that Buck chances a glance at him. His brow is furrowed deeply, and he’s frowning at Buck.
“I would follow you anywhere too, you know,” he says.

There’s a story that they tell to frighten children, a story carried on the winds of the Texas prairie. It’s a story that tells of a boy who was shunned by his family and who hated them in turn. Everyone in the town looked on with apathetic, performative pity at the wreck that the boy had become. Some blamed the boy for deserving such treatment, some blamed the family for treating him so.
One dark night in the dead of winter, the boy murdered his family and burned their house to the ground, or so the story goes. Some believe that he took his own life. But some believe that he ran away into the night and still lives alone in the prairie, killing any unfortunate soul who happens to cross his path. No one knows for sure. But they say that if you are out on the open prairie after dark, you will not see him, but you can sometimes feel him watching you.

Summary
John "Soap" MacTavish goes KIA - just another kid taken too young, another Seargent lost to Price's war against feared terrorist Vladimir Makarov.
Price mourns. He meets a soldier named Ghost, a man called Gaz, forms a special attack force called Task Force 141 - but he never forgets Soap.
Until suddenly, Soap isn't dead.
Spector-07 is one of many, a dastardly troupe of highly trained, demonic butchers at their master's call - an attack dog on a leash. He doesn't remember much of anything from the Before; bits and pieces of patchwork soul, not enough, not concrete. Even though he questions more than he should, he's not going to risk the pain.
Until he does.
Between meeting new (and old) friends, fighting for his life on more than one occasion, and an insurmountable number of injuries, Spectre-07 learns to be Soap again.
And even better - he learns to be Johnny.

“Our second tribute from District Twelve is Evan Buckley.”
Eddie’s eyes snap up and he’s pretty fucking sure his heart stops beating all together. If he lets his eyes flutter close he can feel the patter of rain, harsh and ice cold, against his skin. The way the air saturates with the smell of burnt bread.
He can see the shape of a boy thrown out into the mud, hands cradling something precious in his hand. The way that bundle was placed in Eddie’s own, shaking palms as a voice whispered, I’m so sorry I can’t do more before he was gone.
But Eddie doesn’t let his eyes close. He watches as Evan Buckley — Buck, please just call me Buck — ascends the stairs to take his place next to Eddie.
Not you. Please. Anyone, but you.
