Almost 6 years ago, Lord Vetinari met an elegant, intelligent woman while on a diplomatic visit to Quirm. She had little interest in Ankhmorpork politics, yet still managed to impress him enough to actually get him in bed. Almost 6 years ago, they said goodbye to each other, both content to leave matters where they lay. Vetinari had returned and largely forgotten about the incident, while she had returned to her family, pleased to finally provide the heir they needed.
Sadly, almost 6 years later, family politics and disinterest have deemed the child 'unnecessary'.
So, Lord Vetinari is about to get a surprise gift.

“No. I never asked,” said Vimes shortly. “It’s a flower. Anyone can wear a flower.”This is a re-telling of Night Watch from the viewpoint of Vetinari. 'John Keel' and Vetinari never directly meet in Night Watch, but they have indirect interactions. It's clear Vetinari is fascinated by him. After the People's Revolution of the Glorious 25th of May, Vetinari would have investigated and pieced the whole story together. Many of the phrases and concepts are borrowed directly from the book, with reverence, plus original materials.
If you haven't read Night Watch, Samuel Vimes gets magically thrown back in time 30 years, just before a revolution in Ankh-Morpork. He assumes the role of his own mentor, John Keel, to the Night Watch recruit Sam Vimes and has to make sure his actions take place correctly in order to get home. Young Vetinari is also influenced by Vimes/ Keel. Being Vimes, he soon finds conflicts between what he wants and what the turbulent city needs.Series
