"Maggie stretches her arm further, hoping she has got the worst of it, when her fingertips came in contact with a sleek-feeling stack of paper, and immediately recognizes it to be a magazine. Praying that it wasn’t some Playboy or some other vulgar nudie, she slowly pulls it out, her curiosity overcoming her knowledge that she should allow her son some privacy.
She lets out a sigh of relief when she read the title. It was just some Sports Illustrated magazine, but instead of the swimsuit edition, it was just the most recent college baseball edition. Maggie huffs a laugh, eyebrows raised. She had no idea Richie was interested in baseball, why hadn’t he said anything?"
Maggie finds a copy of Sports Illustrated under Richie's bed while cleaning, and brings it up at dinner that night.

Eddie looks determined.
“I don’t know who I am. I thought you might be able to help me,” he holds up the jacket and Richie’s heart stops. “Are you Richie Tozier?”
It’s probably the scotch at 2pm, or maybe that he skipped his usual Captain Crunch break in favor of a morning cry session because it is Thursday after all, or maybe that the love of his life is back from the dead and doesn’t know who he is, but Richie doesn’t have time to figure out exactly what makes him feel so lightheaded before his body gives up and pitches head-first into the hallway floor.

Almost every time the lights turn off and they cram in the shitty twin bed, Richie seems to become a different person. Maybe not different, per say, but the stupid jokes and teasing die down, the guard of nonchalance dropping. Eddie feels lucky to see this side of Richie, soft and caring—vulnerable. It’s not like he hates the other side of Richie, he secretly enjoys their constant banter and his dumb jokes. No, it’s that this side is rare, and it’s something beautiful. Here, safe in the soft flannel sheets, it feels like they are the only two souls for miles, and they can be themselves, and that is terrifying and reassuring all at once.
“I’m gonna miss this. When we go off to college,” Richie admits, the weight behind his words telling Eddie he felt the same about their shared nights.

On the last day of summer, Richie goes to the clubhouse on his lonesome, only to find Eddie already there and in the most coveted spot-- the hammock. What was supposed to be a simple afternoon changes course as they process the events of their summer, providing comfort for one another, leading to Richie realizing something about himself, and how he feels for Eddie.

They return to their individual activities, but Richie can’t get past the first few pages of his comic. He can’t focus, not with how close they are. Their bare legs are brushed against one another, and Eddie’s leaning his head against Richie’s shin as he writes, jutting his tongue out as he erases something. The touch, the way he looks, it’s overwhelming. It’s overwhelming that he’s alive, that they’re both still here, together, after everything.Bookmarked by Palsied
