Summary
Steve isn’t used to have anything that is truly his. He’s grown up in an era of hand-me-downs. Everything he’d grown up with was made for somebody else. Was pulled and pushed and squeezed to make fit. So when his soul carved out space on his hipbone, swathes of dark ink spilling across his skin like a balm, he was nearly overcome by relief that this was just for him. When his heart was hollowed leaving room to say here, look, I made us a home, he let out a quick and violent sob and gave thanks to a god he didn’t believe in.

He turns sixteen in front of his bathroom mirror with a chill across his skin, goosebumps on his arms, and a burn across his sternum. A wet laugh bubbles up from his mouth, too close to tears, as he watches avidly as ink pours across his skin. He thumbs the mark, presses into it, and gasps when he feels his stomach twist and a feeling he can’t shake that his soulmark is somewhere out there doing the same.

He’s answered very quickly when Steve drops to one knee. Quite literally drops, knee smacking against the concrete floor loud enough to echo in the now silent room. Tony thinks he hears Bruce gasp somewhere like some Victorian heroine, and he’d spare a moment to roll his eyes at his reaction but he’s too busy trying to breathe around his heart that is now lodged in his throat.
“Steve?” His voice is high, tilting up on a question.

Your car is your prized possession and amidst all the worry and concern of your medical studies, drowning in even more debt sounds as suffocating as it would be.
Of course, you never thought of the possibility of the mechanic being the problem.
A hot, polite, gentle, and silent-type of problem.
Drowning in debt would be easier to navigate than the blue of Bucky Barnes’s eyes.

A slow smile creeps into his features, and his dark eyes flash. “Oh, you’re asking the good questions, Wheeler.” He takes another long pull of his joint, dragging the moment out for dramatic effect. Steve doesn’t care. He wants to know the answer. He needs to know.
Eventually, Eddie blows out the smoke, eyes a little hazy as he grins at the ceiling.
